Working Hours per Year Calculator (with hourly / daily rate)
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics convention is 40 hours/week × 52 weeks = 2080 hours/year (gross), but after deducting annual leave, public holidays and sick days most workers land in 1750–1900 net hours. Public-holiday counts vary widely: Hong Kong 17, UK 8, US 11 (federal), Singapore 11, Japan 16, UAE 14. Enter your weekly hours, annual leave and public holidays and the tool returns gross and net annual hours, effective working days and working weeks; add an annual salary and the tool computes the "true" hourly, daily and monthly rate — useful for freelance pricing, contractor cost estimates, HR salary-package design, and overtime baselines (most countries compute OT premiums at 1.5× / 2× of salary ÷ actual hours).
Enter valid values: weekly 1–80, leave 0–60 days, public holidays 0–50 days.

Formula
gross hours = weekly hours × 52 net hours = gross hours − (annual leave + public holidays + sick days) × (weekly hours ⁄ 5) hourly rate = annual salary ⁄ net hours

- · Public-holiday counts by region (2024): Hong Kong 17, Macau 17, Taiwan 12–14, Singapore 11, Malaysia 11–17 (state-dependent), India 17 (federal + local), Japan 16 (incl. substitutes), South Korea 15, UK 8 (England & Wales), France 11, Germany 9–13 (by state), US 11 (federal — not mandated for private sector), Canada 9 (federal + provincial), Australia 7 (federal + state), UAE 14, Saudi Arabia ~7.
- · Gross vs net by country: (1) US full-time: 40 × 52 = 2080 gross; minus 15 vac + 11 PH + 5 sick = 31 days × 8 = 248 hr → net ~1832; (2) UK: 37.5 × 52 = 1950 gross; 28 leave (incl. PH) + 5 sick = 33 days × 7.5 = 247.5 → net ~1702; (3) Hong Kong: 44 × 52 = 2288; 14 vac + 17 PH = 31 days × 8.8 = 273 → net ~2015; (4) France: 35 × 52 = 1820; 30 vac + 11 PH = 41 days × 7 = 287 → net ~1533 (lowest in OECD).
- · Overtime baselines: (1) US FLSA — 1.5× from hour 41 of the week; (2) Hong Kong — not mandated for private sector, typically 1.0–1.5× by contract; (3) UK Working Time Directive — 48-hour weekly cap (worker can opt out); (4) Japan — 45 hr/month and 360 hr/year cap; (5) Germany — 10 hr/day cap. The "effective hourly rate" from this tool is the standard base for OT premiums.
- · Freelance pricing formula: to net the same take-home as an employee, freelancers should bill (net hourly rate) × 1.5–2.0 — to cover self-employment tax, own health insurance, no paid vacation, no sick leave and a slow-period buffer. Platform fees (Stripe 2.9%, Upwork 5–10%, Toptal 20%) need to be added on top.
- · Limitations: the tool assumes (1) a 5-day workweek (some retail / hospitality jobs are 6 days); (2) daily hours = weekly ÷ 5 (does not match part-time, shift work or 4-day weeks exactly); (3) all leave is fully taken (21% of US workers leave PTO unused — BLS 2023); (4) excludes OT, bonus and commission. For a 4-day week (4 × 10 hr), enter weekly hours = 40 with corresponding leave — the model still works.
- · OECD ranking of actual hours worked per worker (2023): Mexico 2,207; Costa Rica 2,148; India ~2,100 (estimated); Greece 1,886; South Korea 1,872; US 1,799; Japan 1,607; Australia 1,683; Canada 1,652; UK 1,532; France 1,500; Netherlands 1,425; Germany 1,343 (lowest). The spread is driven mainly by vacation policy and part-time prevalence.
Frequently asked
Why is my net total around 1864 hours rather than 2080 — am I actually less busy?
2080 is the theoretical "no holidays, never sick, no public holidays" limit; almost nobody actually works that. The major deductions: (1) US full-time — average 15 vacation + 11 PH = 26 × 8 = 208 hr, plus 5 sick = 240 → net ~1840; (2) UK — statutory min 28 days incl. PH = 28 × 7.5 = 210, plus 5 sick → net ~1702; (3) HK — 14 statutory annual leave + 17 PH = 31 × 8.8 = 273 → net ~2015; (4) France — 5-week vacation + 11 PH = 36 × 7 = 252 → net 1568; (5) Germany — 30 vac + 9 PH = 39 × 7.7 = 300 → net 1340, the lowest in the OECD. Whether you are "busy" is not about net hours — it is about stress density, deadline pressure and decision load. Medical residents log ~3000 hr/year including on-call; IB analysts ~3500. For most office workers 1800–1900 net hours already counts as a heavy load — a full-time job should still leave room for family and leisure.
I freelance and want the same take-home as an employee — what hourly rate should I charge?
Conservative: employee hourly × 1.5; safe: × 2.0; premium: × 2.5–3.0. The components: (1) Self-employment tax — employees split Social Security with the employer; freelancers pay both halves (15.3% US SE tax = ~1.18× multiplier); (2) Health insurance — individual plans cost 50–100% more than an employer group plan, e.g. $300/mo becomes $600+/mo → ~1.05× multiplier; (3) Paid leave — vacation + sick + holidays ≈ 200 hr of zero income → ~1.15×; (4) Slow-period buffer — typical billable utilisation is 60–70% (lead-gen, negotiation, admin is unbillable), so you need 1.4–1.7× to net the same; (5) Retirement and disability insurance you fund yourself → ~1.05×; (6) Platform fees (Upwork 5–10%, Toptal 20%) → 1.08–1.15×. Compounded, the floor is ~1.5×, the realistic mark is ~2.0×, premium / specialist work goes to 2.5–3.0×. If your employee equivalent is $50/hr, freelance pricing starts at $75–100/hr.
Does a 4-day workweek (4 × 10 hr) change the net hours?
In theory net hours are unchanged (40 × 52 = 2080 gross), but leave "burns" faster. This tool assumes a 5-day workweek so each leave day = weekly hours / 5 = 8 hr; in a 4-day model each leave day = 40 / 4 = 10 hr, so equivalent leave deducts more. Iceland's 4-day trial (2015–2019) showed net hours dropped ~6% because vacation and public holidays are counted in days, and you fit them into fewer working days. Microsoft Japan's 2019 trial achieved the same (actually 40% higher) productivity in a 4-day week — not because "people went faster" but because a whole day of meeting / email overhead disappeared. Practical use of this tool: (1) 4 × 10 compressed schedule — enter weekly hours = 40 with the usual leave / PH counts, and net hours are correct; (2) remember each leave day now removes 10 hr, so the same leave count cuts deeper than under a 5-day schedule; (3) for a true shorter 4 × 8 = 32 hr/week, enter weekly hours = 32.
