Generation Calculator (Birth Year)
Enter a birth year to instantly classify it by the standard Pew Research Center 2019/2023 generation cohorts — Greatest, Silent, Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials (Y), Gen Z, plus the McCrindle Research definitions for Gen Alpha and Gen Beta. The result includes the generation range, current age and whether the person sits in the early, core or late third of the cohort.

Formula
Greatest: 1901–1927 · Silent: 1928–1945 · Boomers: 1946–1964 · Gen X: 1965–1980 Millennials: 1981–1996 · Gen Z: 1997–2012 · Gen Alpha: 2013–2024 · Gen Beta: 2025–2039
- · Primary source: Pew Research Center, "Where Millennials end and Generation Z begins" (Dimock, 2019), reaffirmed in 2023.
- · Pew has not yet issued official boundaries for Generation Alpha or Beta. This tool follows the most-cited working definitions from McCrindle Research in Sydney: Alpha 2013–2024 and Beta 2025–2039.
- · Generation labels are descriptive conventions, not hard rules. People born within one or two years of a boundary (e.g. 1980 vs 1981 or 1996 vs 1997) are often called a "cusp" cohort and overlap with both sides culturally.
- · The early / core / late split divides each cohort into thirds by year — e.g. 1981–1986 are early Millennials, 1987–1991 core, 1992–1996 late.
- · Other scholars use slightly different boundaries (Strauss & Howe and The Economist sometimes extend Millennials to 1982–2004). This tool sticks to the Pew set for consistency.
- · East Asian media also use birth-decade labels ("七 / 八 / 九 / 零零後") that roughly map to Boomer / Gen X / Millennial / Gen Z respectively.
Frequently asked
What is the difference between being born in 1996 versus 1997?
Under the 2019 Pew Research boundaries, someone born in 1996 is the final year of Millennials (Gen Y) while 1997 is the first year of Gen Z. Pew chose this break because people born before 1997 generally have clear memories of 9/11 and the arrival of the smartphone (the iPhone launched in 2007), while those born after grew up immersed in social media. People born within two or three years of the boundary are often called "Zillennials" — culturally a cusp that blends both cohorts.
Who defines Generation Alpha and Generation Beta?
Pew Research has not yet issued official boundaries for Alpha or Beta. The most widely cited working definitions come from McCrindle Research in Sydney — Mark McCrindle coined the term "Alpha" in 2008. McCrindle places Generation Alpha at 2013–2024 and Generation Beta at 2025–2039, with each subsequent cohort spanning roughly 15 years. Other outlets (Statistics Canada, some news publishers) shift these by ±2 years, so you may also see "Gen Alpha = 2010–2024" — both are reasonable.
Do East Asian "post-80s / post-90s" labels map onto Millennials and Gen Z?
They overlap but are not identical. Hong Kong, Mainland China and Taiwan media often label cohorts by birth decade — "post-80s" (1980–89), "post-90s" (1990–99), "post-00s" (2000–09). The post-80s span late Gen X plus the early half of Millennials, the post-90s span late Millennials plus early Gen Z, and the post-00s correspond roughly to core Gen Z. Cultural narratives differ too: East Asian labels emphasise local milestones like economic reform, internet roll-out and the one-child policy.
Are generation labels actually useful, or just a fun label?
Both. Academic studies use generation cohorts to track large-scale social trends — how a generation views technology, politics, consumer habits or retirement savings. Marketers, advertisers and policy researchers rely on them too. But within any generation, individual variation is enormous. Saying "you're a Millennial, therefore X" leans on stereotype rather than evidence. Pew Research itself has reminded readers that generations are descriptive tools, not predictions of personal destiny.
