Frequently asked

What is the difference between being born in 1996 versus 1997?

Under the 2019 Pew Research boundaries, someone born in 1996 is the final year of Millennials (Gen Y) while 1997 is the first year of Gen Z. Pew chose this break because people born before 1997 generally have clear memories of 9/11 and the arrival of the smartphone (the iPhone launched in 2007), while those born after grew up immersed in social media. People born within two or three years of the boundary are often called "Zillennials" — culturally a cusp that blends both cohorts.

Who defines Generation Alpha and Generation Beta?

Pew Research has not yet issued official boundaries for Alpha or Beta. The most widely cited working definitions come from McCrindle Research in Sydney — Mark McCrindle coined the term "Alpha" in 2008. McCrindle places Generation Alpha at 2013–2024 and Generation Beta at 2025–2039, with each subsequent cohort spanning roughly 15 years. Other outlets (Statistics Canada, some news publishers) shift these by ±2 years, so you may also see "Gen Alpha = 2010–2024" — both are reasonable.

Do East Asian "post-80s / post-90s" labels map onto Millennials and Gen Z?

They overlap but are not identical. Hong Kong, Mainland China and Taiwan media often label cohorts by birth decade — "post-80s" (1980–89), "post-90s" (1990–99), "post-00s" (2000–09). The post-80s span late Gen X plus the early half of Millennials, the post-90s span late Millennials plus early Gen Z, and the post-00s correspond roughly to core Gen Z. Cultural narratives differ too: East Asian labels emphasise local milestones like economic reform, internet roll-out and the one-child policy.

Are generation labels actually useful, or just a fun label?

Both. Academic studies use generation cohorts to track large-scale social trends — how a generation views technology, politics, consumer habits or retirement savings. Marketers, advertisers and policy researchers rely on them too. But within any generation, individual variation is enormous. Saying "you're a Millennial, therefore X" leans on stereotype rather than evidence. Pew Research itself has reminded readers that generations are descriptive tools, not predictions of personal destiny.
