Easter Date Calculator
Easter shifts every year because it is defined as the Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox — the so-called "Computus." Enter any year to instantly see Western (Gregorian) Easter Sunday alongside Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Easter Monday and Pentecost, plus the Eastern Orthodox Easter date expressed on the Gregorian calendar.
Enter an integer year between 1583 and 4099.

Formula
Western: Meeus / Jones / Butcher anonymous Gregorian Computus. Orthodox: Meeus’s Julian Easter algorithm, shifted by the Julian → Gregorian offset (c − ⌊c / 4⌋ − 2).
- · Valid years: 1583–4099. Beyond 4099 the Gregorian algorithm needs corrections; the Julian → Gregorian offset jumps to 15 days from 2200 onward.
- · Easter Sunday can be as early as 22 March (1818) and as late as 25 April (1943).
- · Ash Wednesday = Easter − 46 days; Palm Sunday = − 7; Good Friday = − 2; Easter Monday = + 1; Pentecost = + 49.
- · Eastern Orthodox churches still compute Easter on the Julian calendar, so in most years it falls 0–35 days after Western Easter.
- · In Hong Kong, Good Friday and Easter Monday are statutory public holidays.

Frequently asked
Why does the date of Easter change each year?
The Council of Nicaea (325 CE) fixed Easter as the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox. Because the solar date, the lunar phase and the day of the week never line up the same way two years in a row, Easter slides between 22 March and 25 April. Churches use an ecclesiastical full moon and a fixed 21 March equinox rather than the astronomical ones — that is what this calculator computes.
Why is Orthodox Easter usually later than Western Easter?
Eastern Orthodox churches still calculate Easter using the Julian calendar, which now trails the Gregorian by 13 days, and they keep the Julian-based date of the spring equinox. The two Easters therefore land on different Sundays in most years — sometimes one week apart, sometimes up to five — though they occasionally coincide (e.g. 2025).
Is Easter a public holiday in Hong Kong?
Yes. Under the Public Holidays Ordinance, Good Friday, the day after Good Friday (Saturday) and Easter Monday are all statutory public holidays in Hong Kong, giving a four-day long weekend popular for travel.
When does Ash Wednesday and the season of Lent begin?
Ash Wednesday falls exactly 46 days before Easter — 40 days of fasting plus six Sundays that are not counted as fast days — and marks the start of Lent. The Tuesday before is Mardi Gras or Shrove Tuesday.
