Calendar Reuse Year Calculator (When Can You Reuse Your 2024 Calendar?)
Two years share the same calendar if (a) January 1 falls on the same weekday, and (b) both are leap years (or both common). When that pair of conditions holds, every date of the year lands on the same weekday and an old wall calendar can be rehung verbatim. Enter the old year and the tool lists the next five reusable years.
Enter a valid year between 1 and 9999.

Reusable means every date in the year falls on the same weekday — i.e. January 1 lands on the same weekday and leap status matches. Uses Gregorian rules (AD 1 – 9999); the calendar only took effect on 15 October 1582, so earlier years are a mathematical extrapolation.
Formula
reusable(Y, Y′) ⇔ weekday(Y′-01-01) = weekday(Y-01-01) ∧ isLeap(Y′) = isLeap(Y) isLeap(Y) = (Y mod 4 = 0 ∧ Y mod 100 ≠ 0) ∨ Y mod 400 = 0
- · **Only 14 Gregorian year templates** exist: 7 possible weekdays for January 1 × 2 leap-status values = 14. The same templates cycle forever, so every old wall calendar must, eventually, become reusable.
- · **Typical gap patterns**: (a) *common years* repeat at gaps of *6 → 11 → 11* (three matches within 28 years); (b) *leap years* are spaced because four normal years advance the weekday by 4 × 365 + 1 = 1 461 ≡ 5 mod 7, requiring five leap cycles to wrap, so *leap years usually repeat every 28 years* (e.g. 1972 → 2000 → 2028 → 2056).
- · **Century-year exceptions**: 1900, 2100, 2200 and 2300 are *not* leap years (divisible by 100 but not 400), which breaks the 28-year leap cycle. A leap year that straddles 2100 jumps to a 40-year gap instead of 28.
- · **Pre-Gregorian caveat**: the Gregorian calendar was promulgated 15 October 1582 (Pope Gregory XIII); earlier "years" here are a mathematical extrapolation. In real history Julian dates were used, and adopting nations (Britain 1752, Russia 1918) skipped 10–13 days mid-transition, so a literal old calendar from that era is not reusable in the modern Gregorian.
- · **ISO week numbers add a stricter constraint**: if you also need the *ISO 8601 week numbers* to match, only 71 pairs of years align perfectly in any 400-year Gregorian cycle. Most printed wall calendars do not display ISO weeks, so this tool uses the plain weekday-of-date definition.

Frequently asked
When can I next reuse my 2024 wall calendar?
**Answer: 2052 — 28 years away**. **Why so long**: 2024 and 2052 are both leap years (2024 ÷ 4 = 506; 2052 ÷ 4 = 513) and January 1 falls on Monday in both — so all 366 days line up. **Practical takeaway for paper quality**: (1) *coated / matte paper* still looks pristine 28 years on, so an *art-printed* 2024 calendar is genuinely worth saving; (2) *cheap newsprint or wood-pulp* yellows and turns brittle, low reuse value; (3) *fine-art calendars* like Pirelli or National Geographic actually appreciate as collectibles over that span. **Also**: 2024 was *last reusable in 1996* — pull a 1996 wall calendar from storage and it works for 2024 too.
Why do leap years usually need 28 years but common years repeat every 6 / 11 / 11?
**Core idea: leap years lock both calendar weekday *and* leap status, so they only align after a long enough cycle**. **The math**: (a) *Common years* add 365 ≡ 1 (mod 7) — the weekday advances by 1, so the next common year with the same January 1 weekday is at least 6 years away (some of those years are leap, contributing an extra +1 each). (b) *Leap years* sit 4 years apart, advancing the weekday by 3·1 + 1·2 = 5 days each 4-year cycle. Seven such cycles = 28 years advance the weekday by 35 ≡ 0 (mod 7), realigning everything including the leap-year flag — hence the *28-year leap cycle*. **Exception**: crossing a non-leap century year (1900, 2100, 2200) skips one expected leap day, so 1896 → 1936 (40-year gap) instead of 1896 → 1924, because 1900 is not a leap year.
How does the cycle work when the gap straddles 1900 or 2000?
**The century rule stretches it**. **Gregorian leap-year rule**: divisible by 4 → leap, *except* divisible by 100 → not leap, *unless also divisible by 400* → leap again. **What it does to the cycle**: (a) *1900 is not a leap year*, so 1872 → 1928 stretches to 40 years instead of the textbook 28; (b) *2000 IS a leap year* (divisible by 400), so 1972 → 2000 → 2028 → 2056 remain a clean 28-year leap cycle (all Monday-leap); (c) *2100 is again not a leap year*, so a 2096 calendar next reuses in 2136 (40 years), not 2124. **The doomsday algorithm** (Conway 1973) is a mental-arithmetic shortcut for finding the day of week for any date and is essentially the engine behind this tool.
