Fiscal Quarter Calculator (custom fiscal-year start)
Pick any date and your fiscal-year start month, and the tool reports both the calendar quarter (Q1 = Jan–Mar) and the fiscal quarter (renumbered from your FY start), the fiscal-year label (e.g. FY2026 or FY2025-2026), the quarter's start/end dates, days elapsed vs total, and the percent progress. Choose start month "January" for the calendar year, "October" for the US federal government, "April" for the UK / Japan / India / Canada, or "July" for Australia.
Enter a valid YYYY-MM-DD date and a start month between 1 and 12.

Reference
- · Calendar quarters are fixed: Q1 = Jan–Mar; Q2 = Apr–Jun; Q3 = Jul–Sep; Q4 = Oct–Dec.
- · Fiscal quarters are renumbered from the FY start month — e.g. for an April start, FQ1 = Apr–Jun, FQ2 = Jul–Sep, FQ3 = Oct–Dec, FQ4 = Jan–Mar (in the following calendar year).
- · FY label convention: a January start uses a single year (FY2026); any other start uses a two-year label (FY2025-2026 means the FY that started in 2025 and ends in 2026), as in standard US 10-K filings.
- · Common public fiscal years: US federal = Oct 1; UK / Japan / India / Canada (partial) = Apr 1; Australia = Jul 1; HK Government = Apr 1. Retailers often use a 52/53-week fiscal calendar, which this tool does not cover.
- · Quarter boundaries are computed in UTC and time zones are not converted. For cross-time-zone reporting allow ±24 h of slack.
- · Leap years (2024, 2028, …) lengthen the Feb-containing quarter to 91 days versus 90 days in non-leap years; the progress percentage adjusts automatically.
Frequently asked
What's the difference between a fiscal year and a calendar year?
A calendar year runs Jan 1 to Dec 31. A fiscal year is any 12-month accounting period chosen by a company or government — Apple Inc. ends Sep 30, Microsoft Jun 30, Walmart Jan 31. Two typical reasons to deviate from the calendar: (1) avoid closing the books at the peak of a seasonal cycle (retailers close after the new-year returns settle); (2) align with government or industry convention (the US federal Oct–Sep cycle dates back to an 1842 Act of Congress). This tool supports any start month 1–12, so it works for any listed company or government.
Why does April 1 show FQ1 but calendar Q2?
If you pick April as the FY start (UK, Japan, India and HK Government convention), April 1 is the first day of the new fiscal year — so FQ1 starts then. But April sits inside calendar Q2 (Apr–Jun), so the same date carries two quarter labels. Accountants and CFOs care about the fiscal quarter (financials, budgets and bonuses are scheduled around it), while macro analysts and central-bank statistics often use the calendar quarter for cross-country comparability. The tool reports both side by side so you can cite whichever the audience needs.
Does this handle 52/53-week retail fiscal calendars?
Not yet. Retailers (Apple, Costco, Walmart, etc.) use NRF 4-4-5 or 52/53-week calendars: each fiscal month is a whole number of weeks (4-4-5 or 4-5-4 pattern), and every 5–6 years a leap week is inserted to keep the calendar anchored, producing a 53-week fiscal year. The result is that fiscal-quarter boundaries no longer align with calendar month-ends — Apple's FY2024 closed on Saturday Sep 28 2024, not Sep 30. This tool handles only month-aligned standard fiscal calendars, which covers banks, insurance, government, SaaS and manufacturing; for retail 52/53-week math, use your ERP or the official NRF table.
