Conception Date Estimator
The tool estimates the date of conception using the reverse Naegele rule: conception ≈ LMP (first day of last menstrual period) + 14 days ≈ EDD (estimated due date) − 266 days. Three input modes are supported — (1) reverse-calculate from a known EDD; (2) compute directly from the LMP; (3) back-derive from a first-trimester ultrasound (CRL-based gestational age, the most accurate option, ±5 days typical). It also displays the Wilcox 1995 / ACOG 2017 6-day "fertile window" (5 days before ovulation through the day of ovulation — the period when intercourse is most likely to result in pregnancy) so you can pinpoint when conception likely occurred or plan a subsequent pregnancy. Runs entirely client-side; nothing leaves your browser.
Enter a valid date and gestational age (weeks 0–42, days 0–6).

Formula
Conception = LMP + 14 d = EDD − 266 d ; fertile window = [ovulation − 5 d, ovulation] ; ultrasound mode: LMP = scan date − (weeks × 7 + days)
- · Naegele rule: EDD = LMP + 280 days (40 completed weeks). Published by German obstetrician Franz Naegele in 1812; assumes a 28-day cycle with ovulation on day 14, hence conception ≈ LMP + 14 d.
- · For non-28-day cycles a length correction is needed: conception ≈ LMP + (cycle length − 14). The tool defaults to a 28-day cycle; on a 30-day cycle the real conception date is typically ~2 days later than shown.
- · Fertile-window definition: Wilcox AJ et al., NEJM 1995; ACOG Committee Opinion 700 (2017, re-affirmed 2023) — the 6 days from ovulation − 5 through ovulation day, reflecting ~5-day sperm survival and a 12–24-hour egg viability window.
- · Ultrasound mode: since Robinson HP, BJOG 1975 the first-trimester crown-rump length (CRL) has been the most accurate dating method; ACOG 2017 recommends CRL-based EDD whenever LMP and CRL disagree by > 7 days.
- · Even with complete data, real conception drifts ±5 days due to ovulation-day variability, intercourse timing and sperm survival. Do not use this estimate for legal or definitive medical conception dating.
- · IVF: under IVF, "LMP" should be the egg-retrieval date + 14 days (retrieval = ovulation). The tool assumes natural conception; for IVF use the EDD mode and enter the EDD your clinic reported.

Frequently asked
Is the conception date the same as the day of intercourse?
Not necessarily. Fertilisation happens when sperm meets egg — on the day of ovulation, or within ~12–24 hours after. Intercourse can have occurred up to 5 days earlier, because sperm survive about 5 days in the reproductive tract waiting for an egg. So the "conception date" tracks ovulation, not the intercourse date. The conception value the tool returns corresponds to the ovulation day; any intercourse in the ±5-day window around it could be the source.
How accurate is reverse-Naegele conception dating?
It depends on the data source. (1) Known LMP with a regular ~28-day cycle → ±3–5 days. (2) Irregular or forgotten LMP → ±1 week or worse. (3) First-trimester ultrasound (CRL at 8–13 weeks) → most accurate, ±5 days (Robinson 1975). The reverse-Naegele step assumes the EDD was set by the 280-day rule; if your EDD was adjusted from an ultrasound, the back-calculation is approximate. Clinically a ±1-week band is considered reasonable.
My cycle is 35 days — does the tool adjust?
The tool assumes a standard 28-day cycle (ovulation on day 14). On a 35-day cycle (ovulation around day 21), the real conception date is later than shown by roughly (cycle length − 28) ÷ 2 days. Workarounds: (1) use LMP mode and manually add (cycle − 28) days; or (2) use the ultrasound mode — CRL measures the actual embryo and does not assume a cycle length. The site also has an "Ovulation Calculator" that takes cycle length as an input.
How does IVF affect the conception date?
In IVF, the "conception date" is the day eggs are fertilised in the lab — much more precise than natural cycles. The transfer date is not the conception date (3–5 days of cleavage / blastocyst culture sit between them). Clinical EDD = retrieval date + 266 days for a fresh transfer, or transfer date + 266 days − embryo day age. To use this tool with IVF, pick the EDD mode and enter the EDD your clinic reported; the conception value will be close to your egg-retrieval date.
