Calendar arithmetic, local civil date. Leap-day births (Feb 29) reach retirement on Mar 1 in non-leap years.
Formula
Retirement date = birth date + retirement age (years) Time remaining = retirement date − as-of date (exact calendar days) Total days = |Julian day(retirement date) − Julian day(as-of date)|
- · Default retirement age is 65 — matching most public-pension systems (HK MPF 65, UK State Pension 66–67, Canada OAS 65, Singapore CPF 65, Taiwan Labour Insurance 65).
- · US Social Security "Full Retirement Age" (FRA) increases with birth year: pre-1955 = 65–66; 1960-and-later = 67.
- · Many systems offer "early flexible retirement" with a permanent benefit reduction (US 62, UK 55 for private pensions, HK MPF 60 with reduced lump-sum).
- · This tool only computes the *date* you reach a target age; it does not size up the savings need (pension corpus, inflation, life expectancy) — pair it with the compound interest, annuity payment and safe-withdrawal-rate calculators.
- · For Feb-29 births, the retirement-year birthday falls on Mar 1 in non-leap years, per the standard civil-calendar convention.
Frequently asked
What is the "right" retirement age?
There is no single right answer — it depends on three axes. (1) Statutory / public retirement age: every system has a default full-benefit age (US SSA 67, UK SPA 66–67, HK MPF 65, Taiwan Labour Insurance 65, Japan kokumin nenkin 65). Most schemes pay 6–8 % less per year of early retirement and 6–8 % more per year of deferral (US Social Security 8 %, UK ≈ 5.8 %). (2) Financial-independence (FIRE) lens: the "4 % rule" assumes a portfolio can sustain a 4 % annual withdrawal for 30 years without depletion, so the assets needed ≈ 25 × annual expenses. If you have 25× saved by 50, you can mathematically retire then. (3) Health and personal preference: research suggests that delaying retirement and staying socially / cognitively engaged is associated with lower cognitive decline (Rohwedder & Willis, J Econ Perspect 2010). So "right" depends on the public-benefit cliff, your FIRE number, your health and your appetite for work.
Can the calculator tell me which year I can afford to retire?
This tool computes the *calendar-day* countdown, not the *financial* feasibility. To answer the latter you need: (a) current net worth (investments + cash + pension accruals); (b) expected annual expenses; (c) expected long-run real return after inflation (typically 4–6 %); (d) longevity and withdrawal-rate assumptions. The standard workflow: compute the target retirement portfolio (≈ annual spending × 25 under the 4 % rule), then use a future-value-of-annuity tool to find how long monthly savings at an assumed return need to compound. This site's Future Value of Annuity, Compound Interest and Safe Withdrawal Rate calculators are designed to pair with this countdown — this widget only answers "in how many years (and on what date) will I reach my target retirement age?"
What is the US "Full Retirement Age (FRA)" and how does it differ from 65?
The US Full Retirement Age (FRA, also "normal retirement age") is Social Security's "full-benefit threshold" — retiring at exactly your FRA pays 100 % of your primary insurance amount (PIA). The 1983 Social Security Amendments phased the FRA upward from 65 toward 67: born ≤ 1937 → 65; 1943–1954 → 66; 1955 → 66 yr 2 mo; 1956 → 66 yr 4 mo; … 1960+ → 67. So "retire at 65 in the US" was true for pre-boomers, but for anyone born 1960+ the actual FRA is 67. You can claim early at 62 with a permanent ~25–30 % cut, or delay to 70 with an 8 % per year "delayed retirement credit" (24–32 % uplift) — financial advisors usually recommend healthy individuals defer to 70 because the 8 %/yr return is risk-free and guaranteed.
