Wheel Rolling Distance & RPM Calculator
Enter the diameter (cm) of a wheel, tire or skate roller and a rotation speed (RPM); the tool applies the rolling circumference formula C = π·d to instantly return distance per revolution, distance per minute and the matching road speed in km/h, mph and m/s. Useful for bicycles (700×25c road, 29" MTB, 650b city), car tires (e.g. 205/55R16), skateboards, conveyor belts, gear / pulley drives and physics class — all assuming pure rolling with no slip. The default 700×25c bike wheel at 90 RPM cadence is a standard cruising case at about 11 km/h.
Enter a valid diameter (0–1000 cm) and RPM (0–100,000).

Formula
circumference C = π · diameter; distance per minute = C × RPM; speed (km/h) = (C × RPM × 60) ÷ 1000
- · Rolling circumference C = π × diameter (basic circle formula). Per revolution the wheel/tire travels distance C along the surface. Distance per minute = C × RPM; per hour = C × RPM × 60.
- · Assumes pure rolling with no slip — accurate for ordinary riding and driving, but extreme braking, acceleration or loose surfaces add real slip and the measured speed will lag the RPM-derived estimate.
- · Bicycles: 700×25c road wheel ≈ 66.8 cm overall diameter (C ≈ 2.10 m); 29" MTB ≈ 73.3 cm; 650b city wheel ≈ 58.4 cm. The published "wheel size" usually refers to the rim ETRTO designation — tire sidewall and pressure shift the effective rolling circumference a couple percent.
- · Car tires: 205/55R16 means "205 mm wide, 55% aspect, 16-inch rim". Overall diameter = 2 × (205 × 0.55) + 16 × 25.4 = 631.9 mm = 63.19 cm. At 60 km/h that's about 504 RPM.
- · Skateboards: standard wheels are 52–55 mm diameter with ABEC ball bearings spinning at 5000+ RPM, easily reaching 50+ km/h in a short sprint.
- · Bike cyclocomputers and car odometers use exactly this formula, reading rotations from a Hall-effect sensor. Low tire pressure can shrink the effective circumference by 1–3% — the typical source of disagreement between a cycle computer and GPS.

Frequently asked
Why does a bike computer ask for tire circumference?
A cycle computer uses a fork-mounted Hall sensor that ticks once each time a magnet on the wheel passes. It doesn't know your tire size, so you tell it the tire circumference (in mm) and it converts ticks-per-second into speed and distance. If the setting is wrong (e.g. 2096 mm for 700×23c but you actually run 700×32c at 2155 mm), every reading is off by ~3%. This tool lets you derive the circumference from your tire diameter so the computer is accurate.
Can I use this formula for gears and conveyor belts?
Yes — any "rolling cylinder" or "cylinder unwinding" setup follows the same C = π·d. Conveyor belt speed = drum circumference × drum RPM; the pitch-line speed of a gear = gear pitch diameter × π × RPM; the wire-feed speed of a winder = drum diameter × π × RPM. Plug the cylinder's effective rolling diameter into the tool. For gears, use the pitch diameter (not the outside diameter) — the two are linked by the module.
How do I get RPM from a known speed?
Just invert: RPM = distance-per-minute ÷ circumference = (speed × 1000 ÷ 60) ÷ (π × diameter[m]). For example, 60 km/h on a 63.19 cm car tire: 60 × 1000 / 60 = 1000 m/min; 1000 ÷ (π × 0.6319) ≈ 504 RPM. The math module ships a `rpmFromSpeed(diameterCm, speedKmh)` helper if you want to wire it into a hardware/engineering tool.
Why does this differ a few % from my GPS speed?
Several reasons: (1) The effective rolling circumference shrinks slightly under load due to tire deformation (typically 1–3%, especially at low pressure). (2) Wear — 1 mm off a tire tread already changes things by a few tenths of a percent. (3) The diameter you enter is usually the ETRTO ideal, not the deformed-under-load value. (4) GPS itself has ±1–2% error from satellite geometry and urban multipath. Long-distance head units and car odometers usually self-calibrate, narrowing the gap automatically.
