Morse Code ↔ Text Converter
Type letters, digits or punctuation to get the Morse code; paste Morse (using "." and "-", or "•" and "–") to recover the text. Uses the ITU-R Recommendation M.1677-1 international Morse alphabet — the universal standard for HAM radio, scouting and emergency-comms training.
Morse output
... --- ... / .... . .-.. .-.. --- / .-- --- .-. .-.. -..
Uses the ITU-R Recommendation M.1677-1 international Morse alphabet. Within a letter: dot = 1 unit, dash = 3 units; 3-unit gap between letters, 7-unit gap between words.
Formula
Within a letter: dot = 1 unit, dash = 3 units, gap between elements = 1 unit. Between letters = 3 units. Between words = 7 units (written as " / ").
- · The tool supports A–Z, 0–9 and the ITU standard punctuation set: . , ? ' ! / ( ) & : ; = + - _ " $ @
- · Chinese, Japanese, Korean and other non-Latin scripts have no official Morse mapping. They are skipped and listed in the warning area.
- · The universal distress signal SOS = ... --- ... is transmitted as one continuous symbol with no inter-letter gaps — strictly speaking it is not three separate letters S-O-S.
- · Timing: dash = 3 × dot. Gap inside a letter = 1 dot, between letters = 3 dots, between words = 7 dots. The ITU uses the word PARIS (50 units long) as the reference for words-per-minute (WPM).
- · At 20 WPM each unit is ~ 60 ms. Comfortable HAM operators run 18 – 25 WPM; CW contest operators push past 40 WPM.
- · Morse letter lengths follow letter frequency: the most-used letters (E = ., T = -) take a single element; rare letters (J, Q, Y, Z) take four.
Frequently asked
Why is SOS ...---... and not some other letters?
The choice was purely operational, not an acronym — the popular expansions "Save Our Ship / Souls" came later. Germany adopted ... --- ... as a marine distress signal in 1905; the 1908 International Radiotelegraph Convention made it the global standard because (1) the pattern is simple — three short, three long, three short — easy for novices to send and hear; (2) it has minimal collision with other letter combinations; and (3) transmitted as one unbroken symbol (no inter-letter gaps) it stays recognisable in noisy bands. Technically SOS is *not* the three letters S+O+S but a single 9-element "procedural signal" — properly written with an overscore: SOS̄.
Who actually still uses Morse code today?
More people than you might think. (1) Amateur (HAM) radio operators — CW (continuous-wave) mode is spectrally efficient: 30 WPM Morse occupies ~ 100 Hz, vs ~ 3 kHz for SSB voice, so it cuts through under DX, polar or space-link conditions where voice fails. (2) Pilots — VOR and NDB navigation beacons broadcast their three-letter ID in Morse; pilots must recognise them. (3) Military — navies still train Morse as a backup channel (passive, jam-resistant, decodable at extremely low SNR). (4) Assistive tech — fully paralysed patients sometimes communicate via blinks or breaths interpreted as Morse. (5) Scouts and emergency responders — used for light- and sound-based signalling drills. The US FCC dropped the HAM-licence Morse exam in 2007, but the actual user community remains active.
Is there a Morse code for Chinese or Japanese?
Yes, but neither uses the international Latin Morse alphabet directly. Chinese Morse maps each Han character to a 4-digit code (the GB Chinese-Telegraph code, e.g. 中 = 0022) and then transmits those digits in standard Morse — 4 × 5 = 20 elements per character, very inefficient, primarily a telegraph-era system. Japanese uses Wabun code (和文モールス) with a dot/dash sequence assigned to each kana; it overlaps with Latin Morse, so operators flag a "kana mode" prefix before switching. Today Han / kana communication is almost entirely digital — traditional Chinese and Japanese Morse survives in historical archives, niche HAM CW QSOs and some military training.
