Frame Rate (FPS) ↔ Frame Duration Converter
Enter a frame rate (fps) and clip duration to instantly get the per-frame duration in milliseconds and the total number of frames. Industry presets are one click away — cinema 23.976 / 24, PAL 25, NTSC 29.97, HFR 50 / 60 / 120 / 240 — useful for video editing, animation timing, game development and motion analysis.

Fractional rates like 23.976, 29.97 and 59.94 come from NTSC colour's ÷ 1.001 offset for black-and-white compatibility; "drop-frame" timecode in editing tools keeps the clock honest.
Formula
frame_duration_ms = 1000 ÷ fps total_frames = fps × duration_seconds (The 23.976 / 29.97 / 59.94 NTSC rates come from ÷ 1.001, an artifact of preserving B&W compatibility when colour NTSC was introduced.)
- · 24 fps: the DCI cinema standard (SMPTE 197M); used for 35 mm projection.
- · 23.976 fps (24 ÷ 1.001): NTSC-compatible cinema content — common on Blu-ray and Netflix originals.
- · 25 fps: PAL / SECAM (Europe, Hong Kong free-to-air) — emitted as 50 half-fields per second.
- · 29.97 fps (30 ÷ 1.001): NTSC broadcast; editing software uses "drop-frame timecode" to keep wall-clock and frame count in sync.
- · 60 / 120 / 240 fps: HFR delivery, video games, and slow-motion capture — 240 fps slowed 10× still plays at a smooth 24 fps.
- · Cinema "48 fps HFR" releases (e.g. The Hobbit, Avatar 2) remain a divisive choice that splits viewers and reviewers.
Frequently asked
Why isn't the frame rate a round number? What's the difference between 23.976 and 24 fps?
24 fps is the actual cinema frame rate (SMPTE 197M); 23.976 fps is what 24 fps content becomes when delivered over NTSC broadcast or Blu-ray. Colour NTSC's 3.579545 MHz subcarrier required the whole signal to be slowed by 0.1% (÷ 1.001) for backward compatibility with B&W TVs. So 24 × (1000/1001) = 23.976 fps, and the video is then 2:3 pulled-down to NTSC's 29.97 fps field rate. Use 24 for cinema and DCP; use 23.976 for Netflix and Blu-ray.
How much smoother is 60 fps than 30 fps? Can the eye actually tell?
Yes. The "24 fps human eye limit" is a myth; 24 fps is just the threshold for perceiving fluid motion. Most viewers easily see the 30 → 60 fps jump (especially in panning shots and first-person views); 60 → 120 fps is also noticeable with diminishing returns. VR and competitive games (CS, Valorant) often target 144+ fps because both fluidity and motion-to-photon latency affect performance. Cinema deliberately stays at 24 fps to keep the motion blur that gives film its "dreamlike" look.
What happens if the timeline fps differs from the footage fps?
Editors such as Premiere, DaVinci and Final Cut rasterise each frame to the timeline fps: if the timeline is higher than the footage, frames duplicate (judder); if lower, frames drop (stutter). To preserve every captured frame, reframe by changing the duration instead — that is the "frame count preserved" workflow this tool models. The classic case is slow-motion: 240 fps footage on a 24 fps timeline plays back at 1/10 speed.
