LED Display Pixel Pitch & Optimal Viewing Distance Calculator
LED video-wall product codes always follow *P + pitch in millimetres*: P2.5, P4, P10 mean *2.5 / 4 / 10 mm between adjacent pixel centres*. A finer pitch packs more pixels per square metre and *lets the viewer get closer*; a coarser pitch is *cheaper but needs more standoff distance*. Enter the pitch plus panel width × height to instantly get the *effective resolution*, *pixels per square metre* and three industry-standard viewing distances: the *minimum (1× rule)*, the *comfortable (3× rule)* and the *visual-fusion distance* derived geometrically from a 20/20 eye's 1-arc-minute resolving limit — handy for AV integrators, event producers, conference-room fit-outs and retail signage planning.
Enter a positive pixel pitch, width and height.

Formula
Resolution: pixelsWide = floor(width(m) × 1000 / pitch(mm)) pixelsTall = floor(height(m) × 1000 / pitch(mm)) Density: pixelsPerSqM = 1 / (pitch(mm)/1000)² Industry rule-of-thumb distances: minimum = pitch(mm) × 1 m comfort = pitch(mm) × 3 m immersive = pitch(mm) × 10 m (SMPTE) Visual-fusion distance (20/20 eye, 1 arc-minute limit): d_fusion = pitch(m) / tan(1′) ≈ pitch(mm) × 3.438 m (tan(1/60°) ≈ 2.909 × 10⁻⁴)
- · **"P-value" is the *centre-to-centre* spacing between adjacent pixels, not the size of one LED**: a P2.5 LED chip might itself be only ~0.6 mm wide, but its *centres* are spaced 2.5 mm apart. Practical consequences: (a) finer pitch → more pixels per square metre → safer for close-up viewing; (b) coarser pitch → sparser pixels, so the viewer must stand further back to avoid the "polka-dot" look. Halving the pitch *quadruples* pixel density and typically *triples to quintuples* the cost.
- · **Where the 1× / 3× / 10× rules come from**: Daktronics published the rule-of-thumb in the 1980s for stadium displays and it stuck industry-wide: (a) *minimum = pitch(mm) × 1 m* — any closer and individual pixels are visible; (b) *comfortable = pitch(mm) × 3 m* — the all-purpose default for an attentive audience; (c) *immersive = pitch(mm) × 10 m* (SMPTE RP 2080-1) — cinema-grade continuous image. Example: P4 → *4 m minimum, 12 m comfort, 40 m immersive*. Most boardroom / retail-window deployments size to the *3× comfort* rule.
- · **The "visual fusion" distance comes from the 20/20 eye's 1-arc-minute resolving limit**: a standard eye separates two points only when they subtend ≥ 1 arc-minute (1/60°). When two pixels subtend less than that they perceptually fuse — the grid disappears. Geometrically *d_fusion = pitch / tan(1′)*, so every 1 mm of pitch needs *~3.438 m* of standoff. P2.5 → ≈ 8.6 m; P4 → ≈ 13.8 m; P10 → ≈ 34.4 m. Tighter than the 3× comfort rule but looser than the 10× SMPTE rule — appropriate when fine detail matters.
- · **Practical sizing workflow**: (1) measure the *closest viewer distance* (first-row seat or kerb in front of a shop window); (2) divide by *3* (the comfort rule) → maximum acceptable pitch in mm; (3) round down to a real catalog rung (P1.5, P2, P2.5, P3, P4, P5, P6, P8, P10, P16); (4) check that the panel width gives *≥ 1920 px horizontally* so Full-HD content shows at native scale. Example: a 4 m shop-window standoff → 4 / 3 ≈ 1.3 mm → pick P1.5 or P2; a 4 m wide panel then offers 2000–2666 px horizontally.
- · **Pick brightness and ingress-protection at the same time**: (a) *indoor fine* P1.5–P2.5 — 600–1000 nits, IP30; (b) *indoor standard* P3–P5 — 1000–1500 nits; (c) *outdoor large* P6–P10 — 4000–6000 nits for full-sun readability, IP65; (d) *stadium* P16+ — 7000+ nits. This calculator only does the geometric piece; brightness, refresh rate (≥ 3840 Hz for on-camera use) and grayscale depth (10–16 bit) must be cross-checked on the vendor spec sheet.

Frequently asked
P2.5 or P4 — which is right for a 5-metre boardroom?
**Pick P2.5 (or even P2) for a 5 m boardroom — not P4**. **Reverse-applying the 3× comfort rule**: (a) *maximum acceptable pitch* = 5 m / 3 = *1.67 mm* — strictly that says *P1.5*; (b) the *bare minimum rule* of 5 m / 1 = *5 mm* makes P4–P5 watchable, but anyone seated near the front will notice the pixel grid; (c) *content matters too* — dense text / dashboards demand the tightest pitch → P1.5–P2; video-call frames and product demos → P2–P2.5 is enough; slide-decks with large fonts → P3 is fine. **Cost reality**: P1.5 typically costs *3–4× more* per square metre than P4, so the pragmatic balance most rooms land on is P2 or P2.5 — happy front-row execs without breaking the budget. **Don't forget ergonomics**: leave 80–110 cm between floor and panel bottom edge so back-row viewers aren't craning upward.
Why is pixel density inversely proportional to the *square* of pitch?
**Because each pixel occupies a pitch × pitch tile, the density is naturally 1 / pitch²**. **Walk-through**: (a) one pixel occupies a *pitch × pitch* square; (b) one square metre fits *1 / (pitch m)²* of those tiles; (c) so *density = 1 / pitch²*. Halve the pitch from 4 mm to 2 mm and *density jumps from 62 500 to 250 000 px/m² — a 4× increase*. **Real-world consequences**: (a) halving pitch quadruples pixel density → ~3–5× cost, ~4× heat, ~3× power draw, ~4× processing load; (b) the *per-pixel detail* on the same area is in a different league; (c) thermals and PSUs must scale or the panel will *derate brightness* (vendors throttle automatically to protect the LEDs and driver ICs). **Design tip**: each finer pitch tier roughly *doubles the horizontal pixel count* on a same-width panel, so a 4 m wall jumps from 1000 px (P4) to 2000 px (P2) — just enough to run Full HD content with no scaling.
Why does the 20/20 visual-fusion distance differ from the 3× rule?
**Because the two metrics answer different questions**: the 3× rule asks "when does it *look comfortable*", while visual-fusion asks "when does the pixel grid *theoretically vanish*". **Numerical contrast**: (a) visual-fusion distance = pitch / tan(1 arc-min) ≈ pitch × *3.44 m*; (b) industry 3× rule = pitch × 3 m. The fusion distance sits *~15 % further* than the 3× rule. P2.5 → fusion at 8.6 m vs 3× rule at 7.5 m. **Why are they so close?** Because tan(1/60°) ≈ 2.909e-4, so *1 / 2.909e-4 ≈ 3438* — every 1 mm of pitch wants ~3.44 m of standoff. The 3× rule was, intentionally, picked to hover just inside the theoretical limit. **When to use which**: (a) typical AV design — use the *3× comfort rule*, plenty for a broad audience; (b) detail-critical content (medical imaging, retail product hero shots, on-camera backdrops) — use the *visual-fusion* distance for a margin of safety; (c) premium immersive deployments (cinemas, planetaria) — use SMPTE's *10× rule* so no seat ever sees grain. **Aside**: viewers with *better-than-20/20 acuity* (e.g. 20/15) can resolve finer angles and want even more standoff — but they're < 10 % of the population and rarely worth over-engineering for.
