Megapixels ⇄ Print Size Calculator (DPI / PPI)
The relationship between camera pixels and physical print size is just one formula: "inches = pixels ÷ DPI". What actually drives perceived sharpness is *not* the pixel count but pixels-per-inch (DPI / PPI). This tool supports both directions: (1) enter your camera's pixel dimensions (e.g. 6000 × 4000) and target DPI to see the maximum sharp print size in inches and centimetres; (2) enter the desired print size and DPI to back out the megapixels needed. Four industry-standard DPI presets are built in — 300 (photo lab), 240 (fine-art / inkjet, visually identical), 150 (poster viewed from 1 m), 100 (large advertising) — plus a custom field. Runs entirely in the browser; no image is ever uploaded.
Enter valid pixels (≥ 1) or print dimensions (> 0); DPI must be > 0.

Formula
inches = pixels ÷ DPI ; cm = inches × 2.54 ; MP = (width × height) ÷ 1,000,000 ; Reverse: pixels needed = ceil(inches × DPI)
- · 300 DPI is the photo-lab default (Fujifilm Frontier, Noritsu, most self-service kiosks) — 300 ink-dots per inch is roughly the limit human vision resolves at a normal 30 cm viewing distance.
- · 240 DPI is visually indistinguishable from 300 DPI at normal viewing distance — useful on matte / fine-art / canvas because ink dots spread into the paper fibres anyway.
- · 150 DPI is fine for posters viewed from 1 m+; 100 DPI works for billboards seen from 2 m+; 50 DPI is enough for outdoor signage viewed from 5 m+. The further the viewer, the lower the DPI requirement — because angular acuity of the human eye is the limiting factor.
- · Common print sizes at 300 DPI: 4×6" = 1200×1800 px (2.16 MP); 5×7" = 1500×2100 (3.15 MP); 8×10" = 2400×3000 (7.2 MP); A4 ≈ 2481×3508 (8.7 MP); 11×14" = 3300×4200 (13.86 MP); 16×20" = 4800×6000 (28.8 MP).
- · Aspect ratio matters — a 24 MP 3:2 image cropped to 8×10 (5:4) loses pixels from both sides. Effective pixels ≈ source × (target_ratio ÷ source_ratio).
- · If the required pixels exceed your camera output, you can (a) accept softness / pixelation; (b) up-sample with AI (Topaz Gigapixel, Adobe Super Resolution, Lightroom Enhance); (c) reduce the print size or accept a lower DPI.

Frequently asked
What is the largest sharp print I can make from a 24 MP camera?
A 24 MP camera (typical 6000 × 4000, 3:2) prints sharp at the photo-lab 300 DPI standard up to 20 × 13.3 inches (≈ 51 × 34 cm) — about A2 paper. Drop to 240 DPI (visually identical on fine-art paper) and you get 25 × 16.7 inches (A2+). At 150 DPI poster standard (viewed from ~1 m) it stretches to 40 × 26.7 inches (A1). At 100 DPI billboard (viewed from 2 m+) it reaches 60 × 40 inches (A0+). For most home and gallery uses, 24 MP is more than enough. Note: aspect ratio matters — a 24 MP 3:2 image cropped to 8×10 (5:4) loses ~17% of its pixels.
Why do 240 DPI and 300 DPI look the same to my eyes?
It comes down to the angular resolving power of the human eye. At a normal reading distance of 25–30 cm, a "20/20" eye can resolve about 1 arc-minute (1 ⁄ 60 °) — equivalent to ~300 PPI. That is the original "Retina display" threshold. In real prints several extras compound: (1) ink dots are not geometric points and bleed into paper; (2) most papers are not perfectly reflective; (3) viewers typically stand 35–50 cm from a photo print, not 10 cm. So 240 DPI is essentially indistinguishable from 300 DPI to the naked eye. On matte, canvas or fine-art papers many pro photographers actually recommend 200–240 DPI because ink dot-gain already eats the extra detail.
How many megapixels do I need to print A4?
A4 measures 210 × 297 mm = 8.27 × 11.69 inches. At the 300 DPI photo-lab standard you need 2481 × 3507 pixels ≈ 8.7 MP. Other common combos: A4 @ 240 DPI = 1985 × 2806 (5.6 MP, fine-art paper); A4 @ 150 DPI = 1241 × 1754 (2.18 MP, poster viewed from 1 m+). Most modern phones (≥ 12 MP) already exceed A4 photo-lab quality. Magazines run 300 DPI; newspapers 150–200 DPI on coarse paper; book covers / art catalogues sometimes 400 DPI. For ordinary office documents (black text on A4) 300 DPI is overkill; 150–200 DPI looks sharp.
