Volumetric (Dimensional) Weight Calculator (Air / Courier)
Airlines and international couriers bill by whichever is greater — actual weight or volumetric (dimensional) weight. Enter your parcel's length, width and height plus the carrier's DIM divisor, and this tool instantly returns the parcel volume, the volumetric weight and the chargeable weight. Defaults: a 50 × 40 × 30 cm box weighing 3 kg under the IATA 6000 cm³/kg air-freight standard.
Enter positive numbers for length, width, height and the DIM divisor; actual weight can be blank or ≥ 0.

Formula
Volumetric weight = (L × W × H) ÷ DIM divisor; chargeable weight = max(actual weight, volumetric weight)
- · Metric: DIM divisor in cm³/kg — IATA air freight uses 6000 worldwide; DHL Express, FedEx International and UPS International commonly use 5000.
- · Imperial: UPS and FedEx US domestic ground both switched to 139 in³/lb in 2017; USPS Retail Ground uses 166 in³/lb.
- · Measure the longest point of each side (include handles, fins, packaging bulges) and round up to the next whole cm or inch — irregular shipments are measured as the smallest enclosing box.
- · The final chargeable weight is then rounded up to the carrier’s billing increment (commonly 0.5 kg or 1 lb), so an invoice may be a touch heavier than this tool.

Frequently asked
When does volumetric weight apply, and when does actual weight win?
Every carrier weighs the parcel (actual weight) AND measures it (volumetric weight via the DIM formula), then bills by whichever is larger. Bulky-but-light shipments (pillows, plush toys, oversized boxes with packing voids) usually trigger volumetric billing; dense shipments (books, metal parts) usually bill by actual weight. Rule of thumb: once each ~5000 cm³ exceeds 1 kg of real weight, the parcel is close to the crossover point.
Why does DHL/FedEx use 5000 but airlines use 6000?
IATA harmonised the air-freight volumetric ratio at 1:6 (6000 cm³ per kg) in 2015 and most airlines have kept it since — aircraft cabins are volume-limited. Express integrators (DHL, FedEx International, UPS International) use the stricter 5000 cm³ per kg, which produces ~20% higher volumetric weights, reflecting their door-to-door sorting and ground-handling costs.
Why is the UPS/FedEx US domestic divisor 139?
139 in³/lb is the stricter version of 166: UPS and FedEx dropped US domestic ground from 166 to 139 in January 2017, lifting volumetric weights by ~19% — a direct response to e-commerce parcels with low density. Conversion factor: 1 in³/lb ≈ 36.13 cm³/kg, so 139 in³/lb ≈ 5023 cm³/kg, basically the same as the DHL 5000 metric standard.
How do I estimate volumetric weight for a consolidated package?
Consolidators re-pack everything into a fresh carton, so the most accurate path is: compute each item’s volumetric weight, sum them, and compare with the total actual weight. If you don’t know the final carton size yet, sum the item volumes and multiply by 1.1–1.2 as a packing factor (tape, void fill, bubble wrap) before dividing by the DIM divisor. Remember: carriers measure the outer carton, so packing tightly really does save money.
