Screen Size Calculator (Diagonal → Width × Height)
TV and monitor sizes are always advertised by the diagonal — but that single number is useless for planning a wall mount, fitting a console, or comparing how much screen you actually get. Enter a diagonal and an aspect ratio (16:9 for any modern 4K TV, 21:9 for ultrawide monitors, 4:3 for older CRTs, 3:2 for cameras and phones) and the tool returns the width, height, diagonal and viewable area in both inches and centimetres. It also tabulates the screen-area change for sizes ±15" around your input, so you can see how much bigger a "65-inch" really is than a "55-inch" — usually a lot more than buyers expect, because area scales with diagonal squared rather than linearly.

Compare sizes at the same aspect
Screen area scales with the diagonal squared, not linearly. "Just 10 more inches" can mean far more area than you expect — see below.
| Diagonal | Width | Height | Area diff |
|---|
Formula
k = √(w² + h²) where w:h is the aspect ratio width = diagonal · w / k height = diagonal · h / k area = width · height Area ratio (same aspect) = (d₂ / d₁)² 1 inch = 2.54 cm
- · 16:9 (HDTV / 4K TV): k = √337 ≈ 18.358, so width ≈ 0.8716 × diagonal, height ≈ 0.4903 × diagonal, area ≈ 0.4272 × diagonal².
- · 21:9 (ultrawide monitor): k = √522 ≈ 22.847, so width ≈ 0.9192 × diagonal, height ≈ 0.3940 × diagonal.
- · 4:3 (legacy PC monitor / CRT): k = 5 (Pythagorean triple), so width = 0.8 × diagonal, height = 0.6 × diagonal — the easy ratio to do in your head.
- · Area scales with the diagonal squared. Going from 55" to 65" — only 18% more diagonal — yields (65/55)² ≈ 1.397 → almost 40% more screen area. "Just 10 inches bigger" understates the upgrade.
- · Not every TV is 16:9. Anything mainstream since the mid-2000s is, but ultrawide TVs, specialty signage and projector setups can differ — type your custom ratio manually.
- · For wall mounts, AV furniture, anti-glare films or hood enclosures: the "inch" number is the diagonal, not the width. A 75-inch 16:9 TV is only about 65.4" wide. This tool gives the real width and height directly.
- · Recommended viewing distance (SMPTE EG-18-1994): for 4K content, sit ~1.2–1.5× the diagonal in inches; for HD content, ~1.5–2.5×. A 65" 4K screen is best viewed from roughly 8–9 feet away.
Frequently asked
Why does a 65-inch TV have so much more screen area than a 55-inch — isn't it only 18% bigger?
The "18% bigger" applies to the diagonal — but area scales with the square of the diagonal. For a 16:9 panel, width ≈ 0.872·d and height ≈ 0.490·d, so the area ≈ 0.427·d². Going from 55" to 65": (65/55)² = 1.397, i.e. 39.7% more area. The gap widens fast: 75" vs 55" gives (75/55)² = 1.86, almost double the screen area. The visual impact of "moving up one size class" is far bigger than the retailer's size badge implies. Use the tool's comparison table to see this directly before buying.
My TV stand is 50 inches wide — what is the biggest screen that fits?
Invert the geometry. For 16:9, width ≈ 0.8716 × diagonal, so max diagonal ≈ width / 0.8716 = 50 / 0.8716 ≈ 57.4". A 57-inch (or even 58-inch — the bezel usually shaves ~1 inch off) fits a 50-inch-wide cabinet. Note that most modern TVs have a footprint smaller than the panel — the stand may sit in the middle ~30 inches even when the screen itself is 50 inches across. So fit is rarely an issue once the diagonal works. For a 21:9 ultrawide monitor (width ≈ 0.9192·d), a 50-inch-wide desk holds about a 54-inch ultrawide.
21:9 ultrawide or a bigger 16:9 — which is better for movies and games?
It depends on the source aspect: (1) Most Hollywood films are shot 2.39:1 (≈ 21:9), so a 21:9 ultrawide displays them full-screen with no letterboxing — a same-diagonal 16:9 TV shows the same film with black bars top and bottom, making the actual picture smaller. (2) Conversely, broadcast TV, Netflix originals and YouTube are 16:9; on a 21:9 ultrawide they pillarbox with bars on the sides. (3) Games: ultrawide-aware PC games (most modern AAA titles) are stunning at 21:9; console games are locked to 16:9 and will pillarbox on an ultrawide monitor. (4) At the same diagonal, a 21:9 panel has slightly less total area than a 16:9 (because it is shorter) — but the cinema picture area can actually be the same or larger. Use the tool to compute real widths and heights for both ratios, then match to your usual content.
