Hours per year

Monthly = annual ÷ 12. Daily assumes a 5-day work week. Customise hours and weeks for part-time, freelance or salaried jobs.
Formula
Annual = hourly × hours per week × weeks per year Monthly = annual ÷ 12 Weekly = hourly × hours per week Daily = hourly × (hours per week ÷ 5) Reverse: Hourly = annual ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year)
- · "Annual ÷ 12" is a definitional split, not a payroll guarantee — many HK full-time jobs include a 13th-month / double-pay bonus, which is not folded into the monthly figure here.
- · Daily pay assumes a 5-day work week (daily hours = weekly hours ÷ 5). If you actually work 6 days a week, enter your full weekly hours; the displayed daily value still uses the 5-day denominator, so divide again if needed.
- · The US full-time benchmark of 2,080 h/year (40 × 52) is the contractual ceiling before holidays; net of ~2 weeks paid leave plus public holidays, actual hours work out closer to 1,960. HK's typical standard work-year is around 2,200 h (44 × 50) — but it varies widely, so defer to your contract.
- · When quoting as a freelancer or contractor, add a markup for self-employment tax, MPF (5% + 5%), unpaid sick / annual leave and insurance — a common rule of thumb is +25–40% on top of the equivalent salaried hourly rate.
- · Figures are pre-tax (gross). Use this site's Salaries Tax and MPF calculators to model HK take-home pay separately.
- · Input ranges: hours per week 1–168, weeks per year 1–52.
Frequently asked
How much is $100/hour, 40 hours a week, per year?
$100 × 40 × 52 = $208,000 a year; monthly = $208,000 ÷ 12 ≈ $17,333; weekly = $100 × 40 = $4,000; daily (5-day week) = $100 × 8 = $800. If you also subtract ~2 weeks of annual leave and ~12 public holidays, the effective year is roughly 50 weeks, taking the annual figure closer to $200,000. This is the simplest full-time benchmark — actual take-home usually runs higher with overtime and HK's typical 13th-month bonus.
I'm a freelancer — what hourly rate equals a $30,000/month salaried job?
Pure conversion: $30,000 × 12 = $360,000/year; $360,000 ÷ (40 × 52) ≈ $173/hour. But freelancers are not salaried — you have no paid leave, no sick pay, no employer MPF contribution (5%) and no medical insurance, and you pick up your own MPF, insurance and accounting fees. The standard rule of thumb is to mark up the salaried-equivalent rate by 25–40%, so $215–$240/hour is what actually equals a $30,000/month full-time job. And that's before you account for the unbillable hours spent finding clients.
Why does the monthly figure not match my actual payslip?
The figure here is pre-tax (gross) monthly pay — annual ÷ 12. Your payslip will typically deduct MPF (employee 5%, capped at $1,500/month), salaries tax (HK uses progressive bands, withheld mid-year via provisional tax), and other items (medical insurance, union dues, etc.), so take-home is usually 8–15% lower. To model net pay, run the figures through this site's Salaries Tax and MPF calculators. Also note that many HK full-time jobs include a 13th-month / double-pay bonus, which is not folded in here — if you want an average that spreads the bonus, divide the annual by 13 instead of 12.
Part-time: 20 hours a week, 48 weeks, at $80/hour — what's the annual?
$80 × 20 × 48 = $76,800 a year, averaging about $6,400/month. Part-time work is often billed per term or per project, so set the "weeks per year" field to your actual contract length (e.g. a teaching assistant on a 36-week academic year, a summer-only role at 10 weeks). If you have multiple part-time jobs, calculate each separately and add the annual totals — but remember that HK salaries tax is progressive on aggregate income, so a low monthly figure does not mean you can skip filing.
