Bicycle Chain Length Calculator
Replacing a chain, swapping the chainring or fitting a new cassette always comes back to the same question: how many chain links do I need to cut to? This tool uses the standard Park Tool / Sheldon Brown formula L = 2·C + F/4 + R/4 + 1; enter the chainstay length (centre of the bottom bracket to the rear axle), the largest chainring tooth count and the largest rear sprocket tooth count to get the link count, inches and millimetres. One chain link = 0.5 inch (12.7 mm, ANSI/ISO 606), and chains must be joined in pairs of inner + outer plates, so the result is rounded up to the next even link count. Works for road, gravel, MTB, single-speed and e-bike — anything that uses standard 1/2-inch-pitch chain.
Check inputs: chainstay 200–1 000 mm, chainring 10–130 T, sprocket 8–60 T, all integer tooth counts.

Park Tool formula: L = 2C + F/4 + R/4 + 1
—
The formula assumes a horizontal chainline using a standard 0.5″ (12.7 mm) pitch ANSI/ISO 606 chain. E-bike mid-drives and full-suspension MTBs should add 1–2 extra links to absorb suspension travel. To verify on the bike: shift to the biggest ring + biggest cog, route the chain through the rear derailleur — it should be taut but not overtensioned. If you are 1 link short (one outer plate), a quick link (master link) adds 2 half-links.
Formula
L = 2 · C + F/4 + R/4 + 1 (all in inches) chain links = ceil(L × 2), rounded up to the next even integer
- · C = chainstay length (BB centre to rear axle centre); F = largest chainring tooth count; R = largest rear cog tooth count. The +1 inch is a safety margin so the chain still has slack at big-ring + big-cog before the derailleur cage bottoms.
- · How to measure chainstay: remove the rear wheel and run a ruler from the BB centre to the centre of the dropout, or look up the geometry chart for your frame. Typical ranges: road 405–425 mm; gravel 425–435 mm; MTB 425–450 mm; longtail / cargo 700+ mm; BMX ~380 mm.
- · One chain link = 0.5 inch = 12.7 mm — this is the ANSI/ISO 606 pitch used by every road, MTB and commuter chain. The pitch does not change with 9 / 10 / 11 / 12-speed; only chain width does.
- · Results are rounded up to an even link count because chains assemble as inner-link + outer-link pairs — each pair = 2 half-links = 1 inch. Most chains today use a quick link (master link, e.g. SRAM PowerLock, KMC Missing Link) for closure; the quick link occupies the volume of one link so it does not need to be added separately.
- · Edge cases: (1) Full-suspension MTB — chain growth as the rear triangle moves can effectively lengthen the chainstay; many manufacturers recommend +1 to +2 extra links (Specialized / Trek horst-link designs explicitly call for +2). (2) E-bikes with Bosch or Shimano STEPS mid-drives — the chainstay is usually +20 mm vs the analogue equivalent; just use the actual chainstay. (3) Single-speed and BMX — use "half-link" chains which can be tuned in 0.5-link increments.

Frequently asked
My math gives ~53.3 inches (~107 links) — why does the tool say 108 links?
Chains can only be joined in an EVEN number of links. **Reason**: a standard ANSI/ISO 606 chain alternates inner plates and outer plates — inner-outer-inner-outer... The two ends must mate as inner + outer, otherwise there is nothing for the pin (or quick link) to grip. So one inner + outer pair = 1 inch = two 0.5″ "half-links" = "2 links" in this tool. **What happens with an odd count?** A 107-half-link chain ends in inner+inner or outer+outer, which cannot be joined. **Why 107 → 108?** The tool rounds up to the next even integer. The extra ¼ inch of slack is harmless and is exactly how every shop sizes a chain. If you want to go shorter, your options are: (1) SRAM half-link chain (BMX / single-speed only) for true 0.5-link resolution; (2) shorter chainstay (impractical mid-build); (3) accept the 108 — the slack does not affect shifting. **Quick links**: a master link such as KMC Missing Link or SRAM PowerLock occupies one inner + one outer slot, so it does not change the even-link rule.
I don't know my chainstay length (custom frame) — is there another way to measure?
Four practical options: (1) **Official geometry chart** — search your frame model + "geometry chart"; the manufacturer's site, BikeInsights or 99 Spokes lists chainstay length in mm. (2) **Measure directly** — keep the bike on the ground, run a ruler from the BB centre bolt to the rear axle centre. Range is typically 401–445 mm. (3) **"Big-big + 2 links" method (no formula)** — install the chain, shift to big chainring + biggest cog, then route the chain so the rear-derailleur cage is fully vertical (9 o'clock); the chain length at that point is the minimum; add 2 links as buffer. (4) **"Big-big bypass derailleur" method** — wrap the chain around big-ring + big-cog *without* going through the derailleur, join it just long enough to close, then add 1 inch (2 links). Methods (3) and (4) skip the formula entirely and are the shop-mechanic's go-to. If you are not building from scratch, (3) using the old chain as reference is usually the most accurate.
Going from 11-speed to 12-speed — does this formula still apply?
The formula does not change — it is based on chainstay and tooth counts, not on speed-count. **What changes**: (1) **Chain width**: 11-speed outer width is 5.6 mm; 12-speed is 5.3 mm; the chains are not interchangeable, you must buy a new chain. (2) **Cassette capacity**: 12-speed cassettes are typically 11-50T or 10-52T, vs 11-32T or 11-46T for 11-speed — i.e. R increases. Worked example: F = 32, R = 50, C = 430 mm → L = 2 × 16.93 + 8 + 12.5 + 1 = 55.36″ → 112 links (vs 110 for 11-speed 11-46T — 2 links more). (3) **Rear derailleur capacity**: 12-speed long-cage derailleurs (e.g. Shimano XTR M9100) handle up to 39T tooth-wrap capacity, enough for a 50T big cog with a 32T ring. **Caveat**: 12-speed Eagle / XX1 / X01 chains use a one-shot PowerLock master link (do not reuse after removal); installation direction matters. SRAM AXS and Shimano Linkglide are similar. **Bottom line**: use the same formula with the new R, buy a 12-speed-specific chain and master link.
