Why does 1 cup of flour weigh different from 1 cup of sugar?
A cup is a volume unit while a gram is a weight unit. Different ingredients have different densities, so the same cup volume weighs differently: ≈ 125 g flour, ≈ 200 g sugar, 240 g water for a 240 ml cup. The converter applies the right density once you pick the ingredient.
What is the difference between US, UK and Australian cups?
US legal cup = 240 ml (the standard used here). US customary cup = 236.588 ml. Imperial (UK) cup = 284.131 ml. Australian / NZ cup = 250 ml. The gap can reach 18 %, so check the recipe’s origin first.
How do I halve or double a recipe?
Multiply every ingredient by 0.5 or 2 for simple scaling. For baked goods (cakes, breads), linear scaling is risky — leavening, baking time and pan size all change. This converter only fixes units; it does not rewrite recipes.
Fluid ounce vs ounce — what is the difference?
Fluid ounce is a volume unit (1 fl oz ≈ 29.57 ml). Ounce (weight, avoirdupois) is a mass unit (1 oz = 28.35 g). They share a name but are unrelated; the converter lists them under volume and weight respectively.
