Bill Splitter (round-up edition)
Most Hong Kong restaurants add a 10% service charge automatically. This bill splitter adds an optional extra tip, divides the total across the party, and — unlike a plain tip calculator — lets you round each person’s share up to the nearest $1 / $5 / $10 / $20 / $50. It then shows the resulting surplus so the cash collector knows the round-up margin.

HK restaurants typically add a 10% service charge (“加一”). Rounding each share up to $10 or $50 makes splitting cash easier.
Formula
Total = Bill × (1 + service%/100) + Bill × tip%/100 Raw share = Total ÷ Party size Rounded share = ⌈Raw share ÷ rounding unit⌉ × rounding unit Surplus = Rounded share × Party size − Total
- · Service charge and tip both apply to the pre-charge bill — no compounding (same convention as the Tip calculator).
- · Rounding is always upward (ceiling) so the cash you collect is guaranteed to cover the bill; any surplus is effectively a top-up tip.
- · Most Chinese / Western / hotel restaurants in Hong Kong charge 10% service; cha chaan tengs, fast food and street food typically do not.
- · Pick “No rounding” for precise cents; pick “$50” when you want to split using HK$100 notes.
- · Per Consumer Council guidance, the 10% “加一” charge must be clearly disclosed and may be removed for unsatisfactory service.
- · Fractional party sizes are floored (4.7 pax counts as 4) so the calculator never tries to split among “half a person”.
Frequently asked
Why is rounding to $10 or $50 so useful in practice?
When everyone pays cash, awkward cents slow the table down. Say each share works out to $237.40 for seven friends — chasing change is annoying. Rounding to $10 makes it $240 per person ($1,680 collected, $20.20 surplus) which is a fair tip top-up. Rounding to $50 gives $250 per person — even simpler, but the surplus is bigger; the person who actually paid the bill via card / PayMe usually pockets it as the buffer.
How is this different from the Tip Calculator?
The Tip Calculator focuses on the total and shows each share down to the cent. The Bill Splitter adds a rounding control that ceilings each share to $1 / $5 / $10 / $20 / $50 and explicitly displays the cash collected, surplus, and per-person extra. Use the Tip Calculator when you just need the theoretical per-person amount; use this one when you’re collecting cash at the table.
How do I enter party size? Can I do uneven splits?
The input accepts whole numbers from 1 to 99 and produces an even split. For uneven shares (e.g. one person ordered a pricey drink), settle that item separately and run this tool on the remainder. A “weighted shares” option is on the roadmap.
