Why isn't the "1 dog year = 7 human years" rule used any more?
The ×7 rule, popular since the 1950s, assumed dogs lived ~10 years and humans ~70, so 70 ÷ 10 = 7. The problem is that dogs do not age linearly — the first dog year alone is worth about 15 human years and the second adds another 9, then the curve slows. A 1-year-old dog is therefore already an adolescent (≈ 15 in human terms), not a 7-year-old. The AKC and major veterinary bodies have switched to the curve used here: year 1 = 15, year 2 = 24, then +4 to +7 per year depending on size.
Why do small and giant breeds age at such different rates?
Studies show larger dogs have faster cellular turnover and higher IGF-1 (growth hormone) levels, which accelerate ageing and raise cancer risk. Median lifespans: small breeds 12–16 years, large 10–13, giants (Great Danes, Saint Bernards) just 7–10. So at 8 years old a small dog is still middle-aged while a Saint Bernard is already a senior.
Is the epigenetic (Wang 2020) formula more accurate than the AKC one?
They answer different questions. Wang 2020 uses DNA methylation as a biological clock, so it captures "molecular-level" ageing and is closer to true biological age — but the original study used Labrador retrievers only and may not generalise to every breed. The AKC size-weighted formula is rooted in clinical observation and already factors size in, which is more useful day to day. Showing both lets you compare; large gaps usually mean the breed/size sits far from the Wang study's reference sample.
When is a dog considered senior?
A dog is generally "senior" once it crosses ≈ 55 in human-equivalent years and "geriatric" past 75. In dog years that means roughly: small breeds 10–11+, medium 8–9+, large 6–7+, giant 5–6+. Vets recommend at least one full check-up per year for seniors, including blood work, ECG and kidney function monitoring.
