Tile / Flooring Calculator
Whether you’re laying floor tiles or doing a feature wall, the first question every renovator faces is "how many do I need to buy?" Enter the room (or wall) net length and width in metres, pick a tile size in centimetres (popular choices 300×300, 600×600, 600×1200, 75×150 subway), then set a waste allowance — the tool returns the exact tile count to order, with cuts and breakage baked in. The "Common sizes" presets fill the dimensions for you, and a shareable URL preserves every input.
Trade rule of thumb: 10% for a straight grid, 15% for diagonal or patterned layouts, +5% on uneven floors.

Formula
Area = length × width (m²) Tile area = tile L × tile W (cm converted to m²) Base tiles = ⌈area ÷ tile area⌉ Order tiles = ⌈area × (1 + waste% ÷ 100) ÷ tile area⌉
- · Industry-standard waste figures: 10% for a straight grid, 15% for diagonal or patterned layouts, +5% on uneven older floors or rooms with many columns. Check what your fitter assumes before placing the order — double-buffering wastes money.
- · Measure the net surface only — subtract cabinetry, baseboards, toilets and bathtubs from the gross room footprint, then add the waste allowance on top. Adding waste before subtracting fixtures double-counts.
- · Tile sizes are quoted in cm worldwide (e.g. 30×30, 60×60, 80×80); 600×600 mm is the same as 60×60 cm. Stick to cm in the inputs.
- · Counts are always rounded up — the smallest purchase unit is a single tile, so half tiles always cost a whole.
- · Keep at least 1–2 spare tiles from the original batch (same dye-lot / firing) after the job. Replacements bought later are very likely to have a different shade or finish.
- · The formula assumes a rectangular surface. For L-shaped rooms or surfaces with bump-outs, split into rectangles, calculate each, then sum.
Frequently asked
How much waste should I allow — 10%, 15% or 20%?
Straight grids are the most efficient layout, so 10% usually suffices. Diagonal or herringbone layouts, or large-format tiles (600×600 and up) with many cuts, push it to 15%. Add another 5% on uneven older floors or rooms with columns and exposed edges. First-time DIY installers should consider 20% — a mis-cut is one full tile down.
How do I estimate when I’m using two different tile sizes (e.g. floor + accent strip)?
Treat them separately. Compute the field-tile area and apply that tile’s waste percentage; compute the trim or accent area (often as linear metres × strip width) and apply its own waste. Trim and pattern strips have more cuts, so 15–20% waste is usually safer.
Does the count account for grout lines between tiles?
No — but grout joints are usually 2–5 mm, which on a 60×60 cm tile changes the count by less than 1%, far smaller than the waste buffer already added. If you’re using wide joints (6 mm or more, common on stone-look outdoor tiles), enter the tile size including the joint (e.g. 60×60 + 5 mm grout → 60.5×60.5) for a tighter estimate.
