Two-Stroke Engine Fuel Mix Calculator (Gasoline + Oil)
Two-stroke engines have no separate lubrication circuit — oil must be mixed directly into the gasoline to lubricate the crankshaft, piston and bearings. The manufacturer specifies the exact ratio (50:1 is common for modern chainsaws and trimmers; older motorbikes and outboards may need 25:1 or 32:1). Get it wrong and you trash the engine: too little oil → seized piston / scored cylinder; too much → carbon build-up, fouled spark plug, blue smoke. Enter the fuel amount and ratio and the tool returns the oil quantity in both mL (metric) and US fluid ounces, plus the total mixed volume and the oil-share percentage — works for chainsaws, weed trimmers, leaf blowers, outboards, two-stroke motorbikes, brush cutters and snowmobiles.
Enter valid values: fuel > 0 and ratio ≥ 1.

Tip: add the oil to the empty can first, then pour the petrol in slowly and shake for ≥ 30 s. Use mixed fuel within ~30 days — oil and petrol separate over time and a separated mix can score the cylinder.
Formula
Oil (L) = Fuel (L) ÷ ratio ; Total mix = Fuel + Oil ; 1 US gal = 3.7854 L ; 1 mL ≈ 0.0338 US fl oz
- · The ratio is *fuel : oil* (not the other way round). 50:1 = 50 parts gasoline + 1 part oil = 20 mL of oil per litre of fuel; 32:1 = ~31 mL of oil per litre.
- · Use *only* a dedicated two-stroke engine oil meeting API TC and/or JASO FB / FC / FD. Never substitute 4-stroke automotive oil (5W-30, 10W-40, etc.) — those contain ash additives that foul the spark plug and coke up the cylinder.
- · Use *fresh* unleaded gasoline (≤ 30 days old). Avoid blends with > 10 % ethanol (E10 is the practical upper limit for small engines; never use E85) — ethanol separates the oil and corrodes rubber and aluminium parts.
- · Mixing procedure: pour the oil into the empty can first, then add the gasoline, cap, and shake for ≥ 30 seconds. Never try to mix in the engine's fuel tank.
- · Typical OEM ratios (always check the manual): STIHL / Husqvarna modern chainsaws 50:1; Echo / Shindaiwa trimmers 50:1; vintage Yamaha RD350 / Vespa 25:1; Mercury / Yamaha outboards with full-synthetic 50:1, older mineral-oil outboards 32:1; two-stroke motorbikes 50:1 with synthetic or 32:1 with mineral.
- · Don't store mixed fuel longer than ~30 days. If the colour darkens, you see water droplets, or you see two distinct layers, discard it — the oil has separated and running it will seize the engine.
Frequently asked
I don't know my engine's required ratio — can I just default to 50:1?
*No.* 50:1 is the modern (post-~1990, synthetic-oil) two-stroke standard, but pre-1980s engines (vintage Vespa, Yamaha RD, older outboards) were designed for 25:1 or 32:1 — at 50:1 they don't get enough oil and will eat themselves. Conversely, running 25:1 in a modern chainsaw won't immediately destroy it, but it will coke up, foul the spark plug, and clog the exhaust. *Correct procedure*: read the spec plate on the engine (it usually says "Mix ratio: 50:1" or similar), the owner's manual, or contact the manufacturer. If you genuinely cannot find a spec, err toward *more oil* (e.g. use 32:1 if uncertain) — extra carbon is cheaper to fix than a seized cylinder.
Can I substitute regular car (4-stroke) motor oil? I only have 10W-40 at home.
*Strongly discouraged.* Four-stroke car oils (10W-40, 5W-30, etc.) are designed for a sealed sump and contain heavy "ash" additives (calcium, zinc, phosphorus compounds) for detergent and antioxidant duty. But a two-stroke burns the oil with the fuel ("total-loss" lubrication), and those ash additives don't burn cleanly — they (1) form hard carbon that gums up the piston rings and kills compression; (2) foul the spark plug and cause misfire; (3) coke up the muffler / exhaust port; (4) some formulations don't lubricate at the higher temps a two-stroke runs at; (5) destroy the catalytic converter on emissions-controlled engines. A proper API TC / JASO FB-FD two-stroke oil costs a few dollars per litre — running car oil to save it is false economy when a seized cylinder is a £200+ repair. It may survive a brief emergency, but never use it long-term.
My engine smokes blue / white and the spark plug is sooty — does that mean I added too much oil?
Possibly — but not necessarily. Light blue smoke is normal for a two-stroke (especially with mineral oil). What you should worry about is *heavy blue/white smoke + wet, black spark plug + loss of power*. The most common causes: (1) ratio too rich on oil (e.g. mistakenly mixed at 25:1 for a 50:1 engine); (2) wrong oil type (4-stroke or automotive oil); (3) carburettor air/fuel screw set too rich; (4) wrong spark-plug heat range (too cold); (5) long-term low-RPM, low-load running so the oil never fully combusts. Fix: (a) re-check ratio and oil type; (b) run the engine at high RPM for 15–20 min to burn off carbon; (c) pull and clean or replace the spark plug; (d) if it still smokes, have a mechanic re-jet or tune the carburettor.
