Number to Words Converter (Cheque Writing)
Writing a cheque means spelling the amount out: Chinese in 大寫 form (壹貳參…元整) and English in capitalised words (One Thousand … Dollars Only). A typo invalidates the cheque. This tool produces both forms at once for any amount up to 999,999,999,999, with correct 萬/億 grouping and cents handling.
Input mode
Enter a valid number between 0 and 999,999,999,999.
English words
One Thousand Two Hundred Thirty-Four Dollars and Fifty-Six Cents Only
Chinese 大寫 (壹貳參…)
壹仟貳佰參拾肆元伍角陸分
Chinese 大寫 follows the standard banking cheque format (GB/T 13495); English follows the Chicago Manual of Style with “Dollars and X Cents Only”.
Formula
Chinese: group digits into blocks of four (仟佰拾個), join with 萬/億, mark internal zero gaps with a single 零. English: group digits into blocks of three (Thousand / Million / Billion); 20–99 use hyphenation (Twenty-Three).
- · Chinese 大寫 uses the banking-cheque character set (GB/T 13495-1992 and HK/Macau bank convention): 零壹貳參肆伍陸柒捌玖 — chosen specifically because they are hard to alter.
- · Place markers: 拾 (10), 佰 (100), 仟 (1,000), 萬 (10,000), 億 (100,000,000).
- · Amount suffix: whole-dollar amounts end with 整 (e.g. 壹佰元整); amounts with cents use 角 / 分 (e.g. 壹佰元伍角陸分).
- · English follows Chicago Manual of Style: hyphenate compound tens (Forty-Five); "Hundred" is always singular; close with "Only" to prevent later amendments.
- · Range supported: 0 to 999,999,999,999. Cents are auto-rounded to two decimal places.
- · The tool generates wording only — when writing an actual cheque, still verify amount, payee, date and signature yourself.
Frequently asked
Why does Chinese cheque writing use 壹貳參 instead of 一二三?
The everyday characters 一二三十 have few strokes and can be quietly amended to 二、三、千 with a stroke or two of the pen. The 大寫 characters 壹貳參拾 are dense and almost impossible to alter without leaving an obvious trace. That is why banks, courts and accounting standards demand 大寫 on cheques and contracts. The convention is traditionally credited to the Hongwu Emperor (Ming dynasty) as an anti-fraud measure.
Is the word "Only" required at the end of English cheques?
It is convention rather than statute, but every commercial-bank style guide in Hong Kong, the UK and the US recommends "Only" precisely to close the sentence — so no one can append "and Five Hundred more" after the fact. Banks will normally still accept cheques without it, but every internal handbook tells tellers to add it.
How do I write 10,001 in 大寫? Is it just 壹萬壹?
No — the correct form is 壹萬零壹. Whenever the thousands / hundreds / tens between two non-zero digits are all zero, a single 零 character must appear as a placeholder, otherwise the amount is ambiguous. The tool inserts this 零 automatically (壹仟零壹, 壹萬零壹, 壹億零壹…).
Can I spell out a negative number for a refund or credit memo?
The tool accepts non-negative amounts only because cheques themselves cannot carry a negative amount. Refunds, contra entries and credit memos are issued as a separate positive cheque or accounting voucher rather than a negative-amount cheque.
