Word Count / Text Statistics Calculator
Paste or type your text and instantly see words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, average word length and an estimate of reading and speaking time. Mixed English / CJK is handled correctly — Latin scripts split on whitespace, while each Chinese, Japanese or Korean character counts as one word.

For reference only. CJK characters count as one-word-per-character, which differs from the whitespace-tokenised convention used for Latin scripts.
Formula
Reading time ≈ words ÷ 238 WPM; speaking time ≈ words ÷ 130 WPM; avg sentence length = words ÷ sentences.
- · Latin "words" are split on whitespace, punctuation and Unicode letter boundaries.
- · CJK (Chinese / Japanese / Korean) characters count as one word each — the convention used in linguistics and most search engines.
- · Sentences are split on . ! ? ; and their fullwidth counterparts 。!?;; consecutive terminators count as a single sentence.
- · Paragraphs are separated by blank lines; soft line breaks stay in the same paragraph.
- · Default reading speed 238 WPM is from Brysbaert (2019), a meta-analysis of adult silent-reading rates in English.
- · Default speaking speed 130 WPM is a common baseline for conversational speech, presentations and podcasts.
Frequently asked
Why does my Chinese word count differ from Microsoft Word?
Word splits "characters" and "words" differently and even varies between versions, sometimes using a segmenter. This tool follows the most widely accepted CJK convention used by dictionaries, academia and search engines: one CJK character = one word.
Does each emoji count as one character?
We count characters by Unicode code point (via spread), so a single emoji such as 😀 counts as one. Composite emoji (e.g. 👨👩👧 which uses zero-width joiners to combine multiple code points) will count as several — this is intrinsic to Unicode and how every text-handling tool behaves.
How accurate is the reading-time estimate?
The 238 WPM default is the meta-analytic mean from Brysbaert (2019) for English adult silent reading. Real speed depends on text difficulty, reader familiarity and language — technical writing can halve it, breezy prose roughly matches it. Treat the estimate as a rough guideline.
Do you upload my text to a server?
No. All counting runs entirely in your browser — this is a static site with no analytics, tracking or backend. The URL stores only short text so you can share a link; longer text is kept out of the URL.
