Possible overall range
How the overall grade moves as the final exam score varies from 0 to 100.
Assumes the overall grade is a weighted average of "final exam" plus "everything else", with the weight you enter. Courses with a minimum final-exam pass mark or curving rules may add extra requirements on top of this number.
Formula
Needed = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight (Weight as a decimal: 30% → 0.3)
- · Assumes the overall grade is a weighted average of two pieces — the final exam and "everything graded before the final".
- · Your current grade should reflect every assessment graded before the final: homework, quizzes, mid-terms, projects.
- · Required > 100 % → impossible without bonus marks. < 0 % → already locked in (even a zero on the final hits the target).
- · Letter grades (A / B / C) can't be averaged directly — convert them to percentages using your syllabus's table (e.g. A = 90, B = 80) first.
- · Some courses enforce a minimum final-exam score (often 50 %) — meet that floor on top of the number this tool gives.
- · Pure arithmetic projection: curving, dropped marks, bonus credit and resit policies are not modelled.
Frequently asked
How do I work out my current course grade?
It is the weighted average of everything graded so far. Multiply each piece's percentage by its weight, sum them, and divide by the total weight already evaluated. Example: a mid-term worth 40 / 50 at 20 % weight, plus five quizzes averaging 8 / 10 at 5 % each (25 % total), gives (80 % × 20 % + 80 % × 25 %) ÷ 45 % = 80 %. Plug that 80 % into "Current course grade".
What does it mean if the required score comes out negative or above 100?
Negative → your target is already locked in regardless of the final, so feel free to aim higher (check the "Best case" cap). Above 100 → arithmetically impossible because a perfect exam tops out at 100; you can (1) lower the target, (2) ask about extra-credit or make-up work, or (3) accept that this overall grade is out of reach. Use the tool to dial the target down to a realistic but still ambitious level.
My class uses GPA or letter grades, not percentages — can I still use this?
Yes — two steps. Convert each grade to a percentage using your syllabus's scale (e.g. A+ = 95, A = 90, B+ = 85, B = 80…), feed those in, then map the required exam percentage back to a letter grade. Grade tables vary by school and even by course, so always follow your syllabus. Don't multiply weights against a 4.0 GPA directly — the GPA scale is non-linear.
Can I run this in reverse — predict the overall grade if I know my final exam score?
Indirectly: drag the target until the "needed on the final" number matches the score you expect — the target value is then your projected overall grade. Or read the "Possible overall range" bar: the worst-case (0 on final) and best-case (100 on final) ends already give you the bounds.
