CEFR Language Level Converter

The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) splits language ability into six levels: A1 Beginner, A2 Elementary, B1 Intermediate, B2 Upper-intermediate, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficient. This tool uses the official mapping tables published by the major English-language testing bodies to convert your IELTS, TOEFL iBT, Cambridge English Scale or TOEIC score into a CEFR level — handy when filling in CVs, university applications or choosing CEFR-aligned courses.

Frequently asked

I want to apply to a European university after DSE — should I aim for CEFR B2 or C1?

Most English-taught Bachelor programmes in Europe require B2 (IELTS 5.5–6.5 / TOEFL 72–94). Top-ranked universities and many business-school Master's programmes ask for C1 (IELTS 7.0–8.0 / TOEFL 95+). If you have not picked a school yet, aiming for C1 is the safer bet and clears the bar for most UK, Dutch, Nordic, French and German programmes.

Why is IELTS 6.5 sometimes shown as B2 and sometimes as C1?

The British Council's official table puts 5.5–6.5 in B2 and 7.0–8.0 in C1, so 6.5 is at the top of B2. Some universities draw their own line — they may treat 6.5 with no band below 6.0 as entry-level C1. This tool follows the British Council mapping, so 6.5 = B2.

Is a CEFR level useful when job-hunting in Hong Kong?

Local SMEs rarely cite CEFR directly, but multinationals, European banks, luxury retail, airline ground crew, law firms, UN / NGO offices and EU chamber-affiliated companies in Hong Kong often state "CEFR B2 / C1" as a hiring requirement. If you already hold an IELTS / TOEFL / Cambridge certificate, adding the equivalent CEFR level on your CV (e.g. "IELTS 7.0 (CEFR C1)") saves the recruiter a lookup.

How rigorously does TOEIC map to CEFR compared to IELTS?

TOEIC L+R only tests listening and reading (receptive skills); speaking and writing are taken separately as TOEIC S+W. So a CEFR estimate from TOEIC L+R alone reflects only receptive ability and is not fully equivalent to IELTS (which covers all four skills). For schools or employers asking for an overall CEFR certification, IELTS / TOEFL / Cambridge is more direct; TOEIC is most common in Japanese / Korean corporate hiring.
