UCAS Tariff Points Calculator

Since 2017 UCAS has used a single Tariff that maps A-Level, AS, EPQ, IB and BTEC qualifications onto one common-currency score. Pick each qualification and grade — predicted or final — to see the running total and how it lines up with the AAA / AAB / ABB conditional offers UK universities typically quote.

Qualifications

3 filled

Pick the qualification and final grade for each entry. Typical UK conditional offers are written as three A-Levels — e.g. AAB (136 points) or AAA (144).

Common UK conditional offers

  • A*A*A*168
  • AAA144
  • AAB136
  • ABB128
  • BBB120
  • BBC112
  • BCC104
  • CCC96

Uses the UCAS Tariff in force from 2017. Covers the qualifications most often held by HK and international applicants — GCSE, Pre-U and Welsh Baccalaureate are out of scope. Always cross-check with the official UCAS table.

Formula

Tariff total = Σ (qualification × grade lookup) E.g. A-Level A* = 56, A = 48, B = 40, C = 32, D = 24, E = 16; three As → 144. EPQ A* = 28; IB HL 7 = 56, SL 7 = 28; BTEC Extended Diploma D*D*D* = 168.

Frequently asked

How is the UCAS Tariff different from A-Level grades themselves?

A-Levels use letter grades (A*, A, B…); the UCAS Tariff converts those letters into a single point score so that different qualifications (A-Level, IB, BTEC, EPQ) can sit on one scale. In practice most top UK universities now state offers directly in letters (e.g. "A*AA", "AAB"), with only some courses still using a Tariff-based wording such as "120 UCAS points including a B in Maths".

Can I use this for HKDSE results?

HKDSE is not part of the UCAS Tariff table. UK universities convert DSE grades (5**, 5*, 5, 4 …) using their own internal mappings — some accept DSE Best 5 directly. If you want the Best-5 score, use the HKDSE Best 5 calculator on this site. This UCAS Tariff tool is intended for HK students sitting IB or UK A-Levels.

Why are GCSE, Pre-U and Welsh Baccalaureate not included?

The UCAS Tariff only counts Level 3 qualifications (A-Level, IB, etc.). GCSEs are Levels 1–2 and never contribute to the Tariff. Pre-U and Welsh Baccalaureate do have Tariff values, but they are relatively niche and not included in this tool yet — refer to the official UCAS table if you need them.

My offer says “120 UCAS points including B in Maths” — what does that mean?

It requires a total Tariff score of at least 120 with at least a B in Maths. So A-Level Maths at B (40 points) plus any two other subjects totalling at least 80 (e.g. BB, AC, DD*) would satisfy the offer. Tariff-style offers are most common at post-92 universities and on technical or applied courses.
