IB Diploma Points Calculator
The IB Diploma Programme (DP) marks six subjects on a 1–7 scale (42 max), then adds a 0–3 bonus from the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) × Extended Essay (EE) matrix, for a maximum of 45 points. This tool tallies the score and also flags the common diploma failing conditions.

A grade of E in either TOK or EE is an automatic fail. Other combinations award 0–3 bonus points per the IBO matrix in force from the May 2015 session onwards.
For planning only — official IB results are issued by the IBO. The calculator does not model CAS or "Grade N" (no grade) administrative rules.
Formula
Total = Σ(six subject grades 1..7) + EE×TOK bonus (0–3) Maximum = 42 + 3 = 45
- · Each subject is graded 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest). A standard diploma load is three HL + three SL subjects.
- · EE × TOK bonus follows the matrix in force from the May 2015 session: A/A=3, A/B=3, A/C=2, A/D=2, B/B=2, B/C=1, C/C=1, C/D=0, D/D=0. A grade of E in either TOK or EE is an automatic fail.
- · Failing conditions flagged here: total < 24, top-three HL points < 12, top-three SL points < 9, any grade 1, three or more grade 2s, four or more grades ≤ 3, grade E in TOK or EE.
- · Administrative rules — CAS completion, "Grade N" (no grade) and similar — are not modelled here. Official outcomes are decided by the IBO.

Frequently asked
What is an average IB score — is 36 high or low?
IBO global statistics put the long-run average IB Diploma score near 30 / 45. 36 is generally considered competitive for top destinations: Russell-Group UK offers typically sit at 34–38 (38–42 for Oxbridge / LSE), US Ivies have no single bar but 40+ is common, and HKU/CUHK/HKUST international intakes often quote 32–38. Anything 40+ is firmly in the top tier.
How is the EE/TOK bonus calculated, and does a grade E really fail the diploma?
TOK and EE are each graded A–E and combined via the IBO's published 5 × 5 matrix to yield a 0–3 bonus (e.g. TOK A + EE A = 3). But a grade of E in *either* one is one of the diploma's automatic-fail conditions — no matter what your subject totals say, you would receive the IB Course Results certificate rather than the full diploma unless you retake. The calculator flags this as "automatic fail" the moment an E is selected.
Will I fail with a total below 24 or HL top-three under 12?
Yes. Once all six subjects are graded the IBO checks these minimums: total ≥ 24, top three HL grades sum ≥ 12, top three SL grades sum ≥ 9, no grade 1, at most two grade 2s, at most three grades ≤ 3, and no E in TOK or EE. Missing any of them means the diploma is not awarded. The calculator lists every triggered condition so you can match it against your mock results.
I am taking 4 HL + 2 SL — does this still work?
Yes. Mark the four HL subjects as HL and the two SL ones as SL. The "top three HL ≥ 12" check still uses your highest three HL grades. The "top three SL ≥ 9" check is skipped because there are only two SL grades — the official IBO rule waives this minimum for 4-HL / 2-SL candidates. All other conditions still apply.
