Formula
GPA = Σ(credits × grade point) ÷ Σ(credits)
- · HK 4.3 scale (most universities): A+ = 4.3, A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0.
- · US 4.0 scale: A+ collapses to A (both = 4.0); other grade points are identical to the 4.3 scale.
- · HKU, CityU, HKUST and PolyU mostly use the 4.3 scale; CUHK uses a 4.0 scale (A+ = 4.0). Overseas applications (US / Canada) usually require the 4.0 conversion.
- · P / NP (pass / no-pass) and W (withdrawn) courses normally do not count toward GPA — set their credits to 0 to exclude them.
- · An F still counts the credits in the denominator (with 0 quality points), so an unrepaired F drags the cumulative GPA down even after retake.
- · Grade replacement on retakes is not modelled here — institutional policy varies, so confirm with your SIS or registrar.

How do I convert a HK 4.3-scale GPA to the US 4.0 scale?
The easiest way is to switch to the “4.0 scale” tab here — every A+ is treated as A (4.0) while everything else is unchanged. Note this is not an official conversion: for US grad-school applications, services like WES or ECE re-grade your transcript course-by-course. For self-assessment, the tab swap is enough.
How do the GPA scales differ across HK universities (HKU, CUHK, HKUST, PolyU, CityU)?
HKU, CityU, HKUST and PolyU generally use a 4.3 scale (A+ = 4.3). CUHK switched to a 4.0 scale in 2012 (A+ = 4.0), with the other grades aligned to the 4.3 scale step values. In short: CUHK students should pick the 4.0 tab; the others, 4.3.
Can I combine my cumulative GPA with this semester to project a final GPA?
Yes. Add a new row, set the credits to your cumulative credit total, and pick the grade whose point is closest to your cumulative GPA (e.g. B+ = 3.3 ≈ a 3.2 cumulative). For a precise blend, recall that total quality points = cumulative GPA × credits — add those to the semester’s numerator and credits to the denominator yourself.
