Audiobook Listening Time Calculator
How long is a 320-page novel as an audiobook? Answer: (pages × words/page) ÷ narrator WPM ÷ your playback speed. Audible's industry narration standard is 150–160 WPM with ~275 words per novel page — so 320 × 275 ÷ 155 ≈ 9.5 hours at 1.0×. Bump to 1.5× and it's 6.3 hours; 2.0× drops to 4.7. Enter pages, words per page, narrator WPM and your playback speed — the tool returns both the 1.0× baseline and your chosen speed, plus how much time you save vs 1.0×. Handy for planning commute, walking, chores or workout listening sessions across Audible, Spotify, Libby and other apps.

Basis: Audible industry-standard narration WPM and Acoustical Society of America listener-comprehension research.
Formula
totalWords = pages × wordsPerPage baseMinutes = totalWords / narratorWpm adjustedMinutes = baseMinutes / playbackSpeed savedMinutes = baseMinutes − adjustedMinutes
- · Basis: Audible / ACX (Audiobook Creation Exchange) industry-standard narration rate 150–160 WPM; Brewer & Williams (Acoustical Society of America, 2010) listener-comprehension research showing 1.5× remains comprehensible to most listeners, 1.75× starts to strain and 2.0×+ shows measurable drops.
- · Words-per-page reference: (1) novel / fiction = 250–300 (default 275); (2) literary / dense prose = 200–250; (3) non-fiction / textbook = 300–400; (4) children's book = 100–200; (5) academic / scientific = 350–450. Penguin Random House trade paperback ≈ 275–300 wpp; mass-market paperback 350+ wpp.
- · Narrator WPM reference: (1) ACX / Audible standard 155 WPM; (2) NPR-style news narrator 180+ WPM; (3) literary fiction narrator 150 WPM; (4) Stephen-Fry-style dramatic 130–140 WPM; (5) podcasts differ — hosts have more stutter / filler so effective WPM is lower than scripted audiobooks.
- · Playback-speed cheat sheet: (1) 1.0× native; (2) 1.25× widely accepted, full comprehension; (3) 1.5× the default for heavy Audible users — research shows ~95% comprehension retention; (4) 1.75× begins to strain, more re-listens; (5) 2.0× best for review / familiar material, only a subset of listeners; (6) 2.5–3.0× speed-listening practitioners / re-reads.
- · The tool computes raw narration time and excludes: (1) chapter intro/outro music; (2) Audible-style ~30-second pre-roll; (3) short pauses for multi-narrator switching. Add a 2–5% buffer for accuracy.
- · Matching Audible's display: Audible's shown "hours and minutes" is the 1.0× native runtime. If you want the 1.5× duration, divide displayed time by 1.5 — or use this calc. Long series (Sanderson's Stormlight Archive at 55 hrs each) @ 1.5× = 36 hrs, still ~14 commuting days.
- · Research: Murphy & Roodenrys (2016) and Pastore (2020) listener research consistently show (1) for narrative / fiction, 1.5× preserves comprehension for most listeners; (2) for dense informational content (textbook, academic), recommend 1.0–1.25×; (3) sustained 2×+ over 60+ minutes produces mental fatigue — break into shorter sessions.
Frequently asked
I only know the word count (e.g. 90,000) — no page count. How do I enter it?
Two ways: (1) **bypass words/page**: set pages = 1 and wordsPerPage = your total word count. E.g. 90,000 words → pages 1, wpp 90000 — gives 580 minutes @ 155 WPM. (2) **convert via the 275 default**: pages = totalWords / 275. So 90,000 / 275 = 327 pages, then use defaults. The second approach keeps the words/page tunable — recommended. For novels the 275 default is accurate; for textbooks / academic prose use 350. Word counts appear in publisher metadata, on Goodreads (some entries display them) or in an ebook's "Words" stat (Kindle shows it).
Is 1.5× really 1.5× faster? Doesn't the narrator sound weird?
Yes — 1.5× really removes 33% of time (time = 1/1.5 = 0.667 of original). **But audio quality depends on the app's algorithm**: (1) **Naïve resample** (old / cheap players) speeds up AND raises pitch (chipmunk effect) — unacceptable; (2) **PSOLA / WSOLA** pitch-preserving time-stretch (used by Audible, Spotify, Apple Books, Libby) keeps pitch the same and shifts only tempo — sounds like a faster narrator, not a cartoon; (3) **AI-based time-stretch** (Spotify Smart Speed 2024+) additionally cuts silence / pauses, so effective speed is ~5–10% above the dial. So 1.5× on a modern app is listenable and the narrator's voice / tone is preserved. **Tip**: 1.5× feels too fast on day 1, but 2–3 days in your ears adapt and 1.0× starts feeling sluggish — the trained-listener effect.
I have 6 hours of commuting per week — what kind of books fit?
**Per-week 6 hours @ 1.5× = 9 hours of 1.0× content**: (1) short novel (250 pp, 275 wpp) ≈ 7.4 h @ 1.0× → 5 h @ 1.5× → **1 week**; (2) standard novel (350 pp) ≈ 10.3 h @ 1.0× → 6.9 h @ 1.5× → **just under 1 week**; (3) long fantasy (700 pp, Sanderson tier) ≈ 20.7 h @ 1.0× → 13.8 h @ 1.5× → **2.3 weeks**; (4) series (e.g. Stormlight Archive Book 4 = 55 h @ 1.0×) → 36.7 h @ 1.5× → **6+ weeks**. **Strategy**: (1) commute → fiction (1.5× still preserves plot enjoyment); (2) workouts → podcasts or short non-fiction (1.0–1.25× to avoid strain); (3) long weekend drives → shared listening at 1.0× with a partner; (4) at 1.5× you can realistically finish 50+ books per year vs ~30 at 1.0×.
