TOEFL ↔ IELTS Score Converter

TOEFL iBT and IELTS Academic are the two English exams most universities accept — but their scales differ (TOEFL 0–120, IELTS 0–9 in half bands). This tool uses the official ETS 2018 concordance to convert a TOEFL total to an IELTS overall band (or back the other way), so you can quickly compare admission thresholds across schools.

Equivalent IELTS band

7.0

Common reference points

TOEFL iBT IELTS
118–1209.0
110–1148.0
102–1097.5
94–1017.0
79–936.5
60–786.0
46–595.5
32–344.5

Default is TOEFL 100 ↔ IELTS 7.0 (a common minimum for US graduate programmes and top UK universities). Each IELTS band maps to a TOEFL range, so converting back returns a range, not a single number.

Based on ETS "Linking TOEFL iBT Scores to IELTS Scores" (2018 official update).

Formula

Per the 2018 ETS concordance: TOEFL 118-120 → IELTS 9.0; 115-117 → 8.5; 110-114 → 8.0; 102-109 → 7.5; 94-101 → 7.0; 79-93 → 6.5; 60-78 → 6.0; 46-59 → 5.5; 35-45 → 5.0; 32-34 → 4.5.

Frequently asked

What IELTS band does a TOEFL iBT score of 100 correspond to?

TOEFL 100 maps to IELTS 7.0 (the concordance assigns TOEFL 94–101 to IELTS 7.0). This is a common minimum for US graduate programmes and top UK universities, and is the default value in this tool.

Why does IELTS → TOEFL give a range instead of a single TOEFL score?

The two scales have very different granularity: IELTS has 19 half-bands across 0–9, while TOEFL has 121 integer scores across 0–120. One IELTS band therefore covers a TOEFL range — e.g. IELTS 7.0 = TOEFL 94–101. The official concordance is published as "TOEFL range → IELTS band", which is why reverse conversion returns a range.

When was this concordance published and is it still considered current?

ETS released the latest re-calibration in 2018, and it remains the standard reference used by university admissions offices and English-test-prep publishers. The TOEFL iBT format changed in 2019, but the total-score scale and concordance points were preserved, so the table is still applicable today.

I have not taken either test yet — can I still use this tool?

Yes for rough planning, but be aware: the concordance is built from candidates who took both tests, so it describes the statistical correspondence — not a guarantee that your score on one test will transfer to the other. For a realistic estimate, take a free official practice paper from ETS / Cambridge first and then use this tool to compare admission thresholds.
