Body Roundness Index (BRI) Calculator

The Body Roundness Index (BRI), introduced by Thomas et al. in 2013, models the human torso as an ellipse and uses geometric eccentricity to quantify "roundness." BRI needs only height and waist circumference, but because waist size directly reflects visceral adiposity, BRI is often more sensitive than BMI in predicting cardiovascular disease, type-2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and all-cause mortality. The 2024 JAMA Network Open NHANES cohort study (Zhang et al.) found that adults in the top BRI quintile (≥ 6.91) had ~1.5× the all-cause mortality of the middle quintile.

Is BRI more accurate than BMI?

They're complementary, not interchangeable. BMI uses weight relative to height — but cannot separate muscle from fat, so athletes, the elderly, and very low- or high-muscle individuals get misclassified. BRI uses waist, reflecting "roundness" i.e. visceral fat. Several studies (Thomas 2013, Zhang 2024) show BRI correlates more strongly with ASCVD mortality than BMI. Best practice: use both — BMI for overall weight screening, BRI for the abdominal-fat dimension.

My BRI is high — how do I bring it down?

BRI depends only on waist and height — height is fixed, so the focus is reducing waist / abdominal fat. The most effective combination: (1) diet — cut ultra-processed foods, added sugar, alcohol; (2) ≥ 150 min/wk moderate exercise + 2 resistance sessions; (3) good sleep (7–9 h) — short sleep raises cortisol and visceral fat; (4) stress control. As a rule of thumb, every 1–2 cm of waist reduction drops BRI by ~0.2–0.4. Crash dieting doesn't stick — sustained waist change takes 3–6 months.

Where exactly do I measure my waist — narrowest point or navel level?

The medical standard (NHANES, WHO STEPS) is at ~1 cm above the navel, horizontally — not the narrowest point (which is usually below the rib cage and underestimates abdominal fat). Key points: (1) stand upright, feet shoulder-width; (2) tape level and horizontal; (3) measure at the end of a normal exhale; (4) tape snug against skin but not compressing it. Narrowest-point readings are typically 2–5 cm smaller than the NHANES standard.
