Vector Magnitude & Direction Calculator (2D / 3D)

Enter the components of a 2D (x, y) or 3D (x, y, z) vector to instantly compute the magnitude |v|, the unit vector v̂ and the direction angles. The 2D angle uses the standard atan2 range (−180°, 180°]; the 3D direction angles are measured from the positive x, y and z axes (the classic direction-cosine convention).

Magnitude |v|

5

|⟨3, 4⟩| = 5

Unit vector v̂

⟨0.6, 0.8⟩

Direction angle from +x axis θ

53.13°

2D: |v| = √(x² + y²); θ = atan2(y, x), range (−180°, 180°], measured counter-clockwise from the +x axis.

Formula

2D: |v| = √(x² + y²) θ = atan2(y, x) 3D: |v| = √(x² + y² + z²) αₓ = acos(x / |v|), αᵧ = acos(y / |v|), α_z = acos(z / |v|) v̂ = (x, y, z) / |v|

Frequently asked

What is the difference between vector magnitude and vector length?

They are the same thing. Magnitude, length, modulus and Euclidean norm (L² norm) are all names for |v| = √(Σxᵢ²). Geometrically it is the straight-line distance from the origin to the tip of the vector; physically it is the strength of a force, velocity or displacement (ignoring direction).

Why are unit vectors useful?

A unit vector v̂ = v / |v| always has magnitude 1, so it carries only the direction information. Common uses in physics and computer graphics: representing pure direction (line-of-sight, surface normals), decomposing forces (e.g. splitting gravity into components along and perpendicular to a slope), scaling to any desired length (u = k · v̂ is a vector of magnitude k along v̂), and computing angles via the dot product (u · v = |u||v|cosθ — with unit vectors you read cosθ directly).

Why is 2D direction computed with atan2 instead of atan(y/x)?

atan(y/x) is limited to (−90°, 90°) and loses quadrant information: e.g. ⟨1, 1⟩ and ⟨−1, −1⟩ both have y/x = 1 but actually differ by 180°. atan2(y, x) takes both components separately and resolves all four quadrants with range (−180°, 180°], and it is defined even when x = 0 (where ordinary atan blows up). For these reasons almost every modern language, CAD package, game engine and robotics library uses atan2.
