Screen Pixel Density (PPI) Calculator

Enter the horizontal and vertical resolution in pixels plus the diagonal size in inches and instantly get PPI (pixels per inch), PPCM, dot pitch, physical display area, aspect ratio and total pixel count. Twelve common presets are built in (24"/27"/32" FHD/QHD/4K, ultrawide, MacBook Pro, iPad, iPhone, Galaxy and more) and any custom size is supported.

Frequently asked

How different is the PPI of a 27" 1440p vs a 27" 4K monitor?

A 27" QHD (2560×1440) sits at ~108.79 PPI; a 27" 4K (3840×2160) is ~163.18 PPI — roughly 1.5× smaller pixels. Text is visibly sharper but macOS and Windows usually need 1.5×/200% scaling to keep UI elements legible.

Is higher PPI always better?

Past a certain density, your eye can't resolve smaller pixels at a normal viewing distance, so the visible benefit of adding more PPI tapers off while GPU load, power draw and price keep climbing. Apple's "Retina" threshold uses this exact idea — the farther you sit (TV vs. desktop vs. phone), the lower the PPI needed to look pixel-perfect.

Can I use "Custom" to find the PPI of my old 22" 1080p monitor?

Yes. Pick "Custom", enter 1920, 1080 and 22 and you get roughly 100.13 PPI, a dot pitch of about 0.2536 mm and a physical area of ~19.17" × 10.78". Any combination of width, height and diagonal works — the result updates as you type.

What's the difference between PPI and DPI?

PPI is the pixel density of a display; DPI (dots per inch) was originally the dot density of a printer or scanner. Casual usage treats them as synonyms, but strictly speaking screens are measured in PPI and printed/scanned output in DPI. A 300 DPI photograph printed on paper and the same image shown on a 300 PPI screen happen to be the same physical size.
