What is the difference between percent error and percent difference?
Percent error divides |experimental − theoretical| by the theoretical (accepted) value, so it assumes one of the two numbers is the “truth” — swapping the inputs changes the answer. Percent difference divides |a − b| by the average of |a| and |b|, which is symmetric and meant for comparing two measurements where neither is privileged (cross-checking two instruments, comparing two formulas predicting the same quantity). Rule of thumb: known accepted value → percent error; equal-footing comparison → percent difference.
What counts as an “acceptable” percent error?
There is no universal threshold — it depends on the field and instrument precision. Analytical chemistry and precision physics often require < 1 %; introductory physics labs typically accept < 5 % as ideal and 5–10 % as passable; engineering estimates and field biology measurements may tolerate 10–20 %. Always check the acceptance criteria stated in your assignment, journal style guide, or measurement standard before judging your own error. Why does the signed relative error matter?
The absolute-value form tells you how far off you are; the signed form tells you in which direction — positive means the experimental value is above the accepted value (over-estimate), negative means below (under-estimate). The sign matters for error analysis, hunting systematic bias, or drawing residual plots: if every trial lands at +3 % to +5 % the instrument is probably miscalibrated rather than just noisy.
How do I handle percent error when the accepted value is zero?
When the accepted value is 0, percent error divides by zero and is undefined. Practical alternatives: (1) just report the absolute error — e.g. "measured 0.003, off by 0.003 from the accepted 0"; (2) switch to percent difference |a − b| ÷ ((|a|+|b|)/2) × 100 — when exactly one of the values is 0, this collapses to a fixed 200 %, signalling a large relative gap rather than “divide by zero”; (3) if both values are very small, consider whether the difference is meaningful at all given instrument resolution or background noise.
