Rise Time ↔ Bandwidth Calculator
In digital and high-speed signal design a system’s 10–90% rise time tr and its −3 dB bandwidth BW are tightly linked: for a single-pole (first-order) low-pass response tr × BW = ln 9 / (2π) ≈ 0.35, so tr = k / BW and BW = k / tr. This "0.35 rule" is the staple check for choosing an oscilloscope, estimating trace/filter bandwidth and judging how fast an edge is. This tool converts instantly between rise time (ns) and bandwidth (MHz) in both directions and lets you adjust the product constant k (0.35 single-pole, 0.339 Gaussian, 0.40–0.45 for steep multi-pole scopes).
Enter positive numbers; k must be between 0.1 and 1.
−3 dB bandwidth
—
10–90% rise time
—
Valid for a single-pole response; multiple rise times add in root-sum-square.
Formula
tr × BW = k rise-time–bandwidth product BW = k / tr bandwidth from rise time tr = k / BW rise time from bandwidth k = ln 9 / (2π) ≈ 0.35 single-pole response (exactly 0.3494) system rise time: tr_sys = √(tr₁² + tr₂² + …)
- · tr is the 10–90% rise time and BW the −3 dB bandwidth. The product constant k equals 0.35 only for a "single-pole dominant" response; use 0.339 for a near-Gaussian (multi-stage cascade) response and 0.40–0.45 for steep multi-pole scopes.
- · Where 0.35 comes from: a first-order step response takes ln 9 / (2π·fc) = 0.3494 / fc to rise from 10% to 90%, so tr·fc ≈ 0.35. Which k you pick changes the answer directly — match it to your system type.
- · When a scope and a signal combine, independent rise times add in root-sum-square: tr_measured = √(tr_signal² + tr_scope²); recover the true edge with tr_signal = √(tr_measured² − tr_scope²).
- · Rule of thumb: an oscilloscope’s bandwidth should be 3–5× the highest signal frequency (or the bandwidth of the fastest edge) so it does not visibly slow the edge.
- · Handy conversion: tr(ns) ≈ 350 / BW(MHz) at k = 0.35; e.g. 100 MHz → 3.5 ns, 1 GHz → 0.35 ns.

Frequently asked
Why is rise time times bandwidth 0.35 and not some other number?
The 0.35 falls straight out of the step response of a single-pole (first-order) low-pass. A first-order system with −3 dB cutoff fc responds to a step as 1 − e^(−2π·fc·t). Rising from 10% to 90% means e^(−2π·fc·t) goes from 0.9 to 0.1, which takes Δt = ln(0.9/0.1) / (2π·fc) = ln 9 / (2π·fc) = 2.1972 / 6.2832 / fc ≈ 0.3494 / fc. So tr × fc ≈ 0.35 — the "0.35 rule." Note this 0.35 is exact only for a single dominant pole; if your system is a cascade of stages whose overall response is near-Gaussian, the constant is a bit smaller (about 0.339), and many scope vendors quote 0.40 or even 0.45 to be conservative. That is why this tool lets you change k — match it to your system for an accurate conversion.
My scope measures a slower rise time than the real signal — how do I correct it?
A scope has finite bandwidth and therefore its own rise time tr_scope (≈ 0.35 / BW_scope). What you read is the combination of the signal and the scope, which add in root-sum-square: tr_measured = √(tr_signal² + tr_scope²). To recover the true edge, invert it: tr_signal = √(tr_measured² − tr_scope²). Example: a 500 MHz scope has tr_scope ≈ 0.7 ns; if you measure tr_measured = 1.0 ns, then tr_signal = √(1.0² − 0.7²) = √0.51 ≈ 0.71 ns. Watch out: as the signal edge approaches the scope’s own rise time, the error of this correction grows fast, so pick a scope with 3–5× the signal bandwidth (tr_scope ≪ tr_signal) for a trustworthy measurement.
