Frequently asked
Does Hong Kong have a sales tax or VAT?
No. Hong Kong has no general sales tax, GST or VAT. The displayed price is what you pay. The only exception is the 3% Hotel Accommodation Tax, reintroduced from 1 Jan 2024.
My receipt shows a tax-inclusive price — how do I back out the net amount?
Switch to “extract tax” mode and enter the gross total and rate. The formula is Net = Gross ÷ (1 + r). E.g. £300 incl. 20 % VAT → net £250, VAT £50.
How does US sales tax work?
The US has no federal VAT — state, county and city rates vary widely (0 %–10 %+). Online orders are taxed based on the seller’s state and added at checkout. Listed prices are typically pre-tax.
Does this formula apply to VAT refunds for tourists?
You can use this tool to compute how much VAT you originally paid, but the actual refund is reduced by processing fees (typically you get back 50–85 % of the VAT). The final figure is set by the refund operator or customs.
