Dividend Yield Calculator

Enter the share price and the annual dividend per share (DPS) to compute the dividend yield; add earnings per share (EPS) to see the payout ratio (how sustainable the dividend is); plug in an investment amount to estimate shares affordable plus projected yearly and monthly income. Works for HK and US stocks, ETFs and REITs alike.

Based on trailing dividends; future payouts are not guaranteed. Some HK-listed stocks pay in USD — convert if needed.

Formula

Dividend Yield (%) = DPS ÷ Price × 100 Payout Ratio (%) = DPS ÷ EPS × 100 Retention Ratio = 100 % − Payout Ratio Annual Income = (Amount ÷ Price) × DPS

Frequently asked

Should I use the trailing (TTM) or forward dividend yield?

Both have a place. Trailing-twelve-months (TTM) yield = past 12 months' actual dividends ÷ current price — this is what Yahoo Finance, Bloomberg and AAStocks show by default and reflects real cash already paid. Downside: if a company has just cut its dividend, TTM lags reality and looks too high. Forward yield uses the next 12 months' expected DPS (analyst consensus or management guidance) ÷ current price — closer to what you'd actually receive, but it's a forecast. Rule of thumb: TTM for initial screening; forward when there's a known guidance change (e.g. HSBC restoring/suspending dividends). This tool uses whatever DPS you enter, so either approach works.

What is a "yield trap" and is anything above 8 % automatically bad?

A "yield trap" is a high yield caused by a falling share price rather than a genuinely generous dividend. The denominator collapses, so trailing yield spikes — but the next dividend announcement often cuts or suspends the payout. Classic case: HSBC (0005) in 2020 — the BoE forced a dividend suspension while the share price was already halved, leaving a phantom 9–10 % trailing yield. Checks to avoid being trapped: (a) is the payout ratio > 80 % (or > 100 %)? (b) does free cash flow cover the dividend? (c) is the 5-year DPS trend stable/growing or declining? (d) sector context — REITs, MLPs and shipping legitimately pay high yields, but cyclical miners or shipping at 12 % usually mean a cut is coming. So ≥ 8 % is not automatically bad, but it warrants real due diligence.

Do HK dividends incur tax? What about US stocks and ADRs?

Hong Kong only taxes profits / salaries sourced in HK — individual dividends from HK-listed companies are tax-free and need not be reported; brokers do not withhold. US-listed dividends carry a 30 % withholding for non-US persons by default. A signed W-8BEN reduces this if your country has a US tax treaty — Hong Kong does not (as of 2025), so HK residents typically pay the full 30 %. Chinese ADRs (e.g. BABA, JD) are doubly taxed: 10 % at the China level plus 30 % US withholding with no treaty relief, so net dividend ≈ stated × 0.7 × 0.9 ≈ 63 %. If you're building an income portfolio across US / ADRs, always net the yield after withholding before comparing it to HK names.
